Position Summary:

The Panel Technician is responsible for assembling, wiring, testing, and troubleshooting electrical control panels used to monitor and automate public utility water, wastewater, and stormwater systems. Attention to detail, technical expertise, and commitment to quality are crucial in ensuring the reliability and functionality of Data Flow control panels.

Job Duties:

Panel Assembly:

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams to assemble electrical control panels according to specifications
  • Mount and install components, including PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), HMIs (Human-Machine Interfaces), relays, contactors, switches, and terminal blocks, in panel enclosures
  • Ensure proper alignment, spacing, and organization of components within the control panel relative to design drawings, and ensure the layout facilitates efficient wiring and troubleshooting

Wiring and Termination:

  • Wire electrical components and devices according to wiring diagrams and schematics, following industry standards and best practices
  • Perform terminations, crimping, and labeling of wires and cables to facilitate easy identification and maintenance
  • Verify wiring continuity, polarity, and insulation resistance to ensure electrical integrity and compliance with specifications

Panel Testing and Troubleshooting:

  • Conduct functional testing of control panels to verify proper operation and adherence to design requirements
  • Troubleshoot electrical issues, wiring discrepancies, and component failures using multimeters, oscilloscopes, and other diagnostic tools
  • Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and quality assurance personnel to resolve technical problems and implement corrective actions

Quality Assurance:

  • Inspect finished control panels for quality, completeness, and compliance with engineering standards and customer specifications
  • Document any deviations, discrepancies, or non-conformities observed during panel assembly and testing
  • Implement corrective measures and rework as necessary to rectify quality issues and ensure customer satisfaction

Safety and Compliance:

  • Adhere to safety protocols, including proper handling of electrical components, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and compliance with electrical codes and regulations.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, following housekeeping and safety guidelines to prevent accidents and injuries.

Job Requirements:

  • Proven experience in panel assembly, wiring, and testing within an industrial automation or electrical control panel manufacturing environment
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings
  • Familiarity with electrical components and devices commonly used in control panels, including PLCs, HMIs, relays, contactors, switches, and terminal blocks
  • Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively for panel assembly, wiring, and termination tasks
  • Strong attention to detail and quality, with the ability to follow written instructions and work independently or as part of a team
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and problem-solving abilities, with a methodical approach to diagnosing electrical issues and implementing solutions
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to collaborate with colleagues and communicate technical information clearly

Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training or certification in electrical wiring, electronics, or a related field is preferred.

Body Positions:

  • Includes standing, sitting, walking, lifting (up to 60 lbs), talking, and hearing safety alerts
  • Work will be indoors in a temperature-controlled environment.
  • The typical office environment noise level is low to moderate, though hearing protection and other personal protective equipment will be required when using power tools.
