Job Description

Research Scientist Molecular Biology

The Molecular Biology team is an internal facing team that is responsible for the design, construction, and preparation of almost all DNA plasmids used by the company. We are comprised of research scientists who partner with other teams to help determine plasmid needs for their experiments, consult on molecular based processes, and lead project initiation for internal research projects. We work closely with research associates who drive our operational processes to construct and prepare plasmids.

We seek a research scientist to contribute to and eventually lead larger process development projects such as onboarding in-house NGS sequencing and optimizing applications with other teams. An ideal candidate would have experience mentoring and collaborating with junior scientists to aid in their scientific and professional growth. This position will engage with other internal teams to understand their projects and provide scientific guidance on using Integral Molecular technologies and platforms.

Integral Molecular

Integral Molecular is a mid-sized, research-driven biotech company that focuses on discovering and characterizing antibodies for under-exploited membrane protein targets, including GPCRs, ion channels, transporters, and viral envelopes. We are a close-knit company composed of smart, curious scientists that takes an active interest in promoting the learning and development of our team.

What you will gain from working at Integral Molecular:

  • Grow and thrive in a friendly, fast-paced, and collaborative environment in the heart of Philadelphia's biotech ecosystem
  • Expand your technical expertise. Master high-throughput design and cloning approaches and develop a greater appreciation for downstream effects on flow cytometry or viral infectivity assays
  • Explore cutting-edge science. Gain a deeper understanding of virology, membrane proteins, and antibodies
  • Develop leadership capabilities. Build technical and project management skills with the potential to take on supervisory roles in the future

What you will do on the Molecular Biology team:

  • Design plasmid constructs for the expression of proteins in support of customer projects and for the development of internal research priorities
  • Design experiments and guide troubleshooting for testing expression constructs
  • Perform molecular cloning including high-throughput plasmid generation
  • Collaborate extensively with internal teams to design and develop experiments that meet customer and internal requirements
  • Provide technical expertise and support to internal teams on molecular design and plasmid construction
  • Mentor junior team members in support of their technical and scientific development
  • Be an active participant at team and company meetings

The successful candidate will have:

  • PhD (or MS with 5+ years relevant experience) in Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Virology, Biomedical Engineering or a related field
  • Prior experience with plasmid design, construction using restriction enzyme, homologous recombination, PCR and other standard techniques
  • Demonstrated ability as an individual contributor, as well as ability to work cooperatively within a team
  • Experience managing multiple projects and reporting results to a larger group
  • Prior experience mentoring junior scientists

Additional experience desired but not necessary

  • Experience with heterologous or recombinant membrane protein expression
  • Familiarity with flow cytometry, viral particle production, and/or antibody production
  • Experience conducting high-throughput assays or leading process development projects
