Commissioning & Controls Engineer (Aftermarket/Service)
Position Summary: We are seeking a Commissioning / Controls / Service Engineer responsible for supporting technical solutions related to projects and products across various field assignments. This role requires a commitment to travel up to 75% of the time.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participate in equipment installations, retooling, debugging, software updates, and runoffs, providing supervision throughout the process.
- Design, implement, and support software and electrical hardware programming for PLC, HMI, vision systems, motion control, and robotic applications.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, controls hardware & software, focusing on industrial washers, fluid fill equipment, and automation systems during installation and on-site service.
- Complete pre-shipment checklists to ensure quality and address potential performance risks.
- Resolve technical issues and validate equipment performance through testing and demonstrations after installation and start-up at customer facilities.
- Perform health assessments of equipment, accurately determine the root cause of failures, and identify permanent solutions.
- Plan corrective actions for open issues, ensuring details on resources, hours, and dates are accurately documented.
- Provide on-site field support (mechanical, electrical & PLC), telephone support, and technical sales support.
- Maintain effective communication with management, project managers, and project personnel regarding technical requirements.
- Develop and document maintenance procedures and participate in design reviews and risk assessments.
- Identify training opportunities at customer sites and contribute to project-related training activities.
- Travel by air or car to customer locations, sometimes on short notice.
- Work in manufacturing settings as a machine builder or controls engineer between field assignments.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Lead and supervise all assigned contractor trades during project installation/start-up, paid service visits, or warranty services.
- Manage field service reports and obtain customer approval/sign-off on completed services.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in industrial automation, with preference for industrial washers.
- Must be a self-starter, team player, and exhibit a positive attitude.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on results, creativity, and attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines.
- Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed to meet customer commitments.
- Experience in automation controls within the automotive industry is advantageous.
- Proficiency in Rockwell and/or Siemens PLC and HMI platforms. Experience with Fanuc and/or ABB robots, including hands-on programming and debugging, is preferred.
- Knowledge of industrial networks like Ethernet I/P, Profibus, Profinet, and Remote I/O.
- Competency in design software such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
