The University of Iowa Libraries is seeking to hire a Digital Scholarship and Instruction Librarian. Reporting to the Director of the Digital Scholarship & Publishing Studio and joining a collaborative team of librarians and technical specialists active in research services, instruction, and academic engagement, the Digital Scholarship & Instruction Librarian assists with the design, planning, and implementation of projects, services, and instruction related to digital scholarship and publishing.

Key responsibilities for this position include:


Instruction, Consultation, and Research Services


  • Directly engage with faculty, students, and staff by providing individual consultations, group instruction, online guides, and support services related to research methodology, technical applications, and other aspects of digital scholarship.
  • Collaborate and consult with faculty, researchers, and students to understand their research and instruction needs and promote library services.
  • Consult, teach, design, and/or integrate digital humanities and scholarship skills into classroom or community settings. Develop learning resources and training events for faculty and student scholars on digital scholarship topics and technical skills.
  • Work closely with the Program Manager to develop DS&P Studio course offerings.
  • Create and maintain project documentation. Assess and report on project outcomes.

Select, Acquire, Organize, Preserve, and Provide Information Resources and Services

  • Assess current and emerging tools and technologies pertinent to digital scholarship, publishing, and pedagogy. Identify and implement new methods and resources to enhance support for digital scholarship and publishing.
  • Pro mote the discovery, production, organization, and presentation of content in novel, effective, and sustainable ways.
  • Support production activities including interaction design, information architecture development, web development, and data visualization.
  • Assist with creating workflows to archive and preserve digital projects as technology and access conditions evolve.

Leadership/Staff and Resource Management/Financial Responsibility

  • Cultivate partnerships and working relationships with other campus units and advance support for digital scholarship through grants and other programming opportunities.
  • Provide resources, project scoping, training and research support, and technical development of digital scholarship projects.
  • Mentor and train graduate students in continuous learning and skill development.
  • Assist with strategic planning at the unit level.

Continuous Learning & Skills Development

  • Engage in appropriate professional development, continuing education, research activities, and skills development related to emerging technologies and tools in digital scholarship and publishing.

Professional Contributions

  • Contribute to the profession through research, publishing, teaching, and/or service.
  • Participate in professional panels, symposia, and conferences related to librarianship, digital scholarship and publishing, and academic research.


Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Master's degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited program, or advanced degree in relevant discipline.

Required Qualifications:

  • Two or more years professional job-related experience.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for working closely with scholars and student populations.
  • Knowledge of digital methods and technologies, including experience with digital publishing platforms, text analysis, data visualization software, programming languages, and data processing and curation applications.
  • Knowledge of the potential benefits and limitations of various digital platforms and tools and ability to communicate them clearly to a range of audiences.
  • Ability to manage projects and balance competing priorities.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated project management skills and/or formal training in project management, workflow optimization, or continuous quality improvement.
  • Experience with digital scholarship platforms such as Omeka, Scalar, or WordPress for digital exhibits and scholarly websites. Knowledge of repository software like DSpace or Fedora.
  • Experience with text analysis tools (such as Voyant Tools, TEI, or NLTK in Python) and mapping software (like ArcGIS or QGIS) for spatial analysis.
  • Experience providing user support in an academic environment through group instruction, individual consultations, and other modes of teaching and engagement.
  • Familiarity with issues of copyright, fair use, and ethical practices in research and publishing.

The hiring salary range for this Specialist Librarian position is $58,000 - $74,000.

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any conviction history and will be subject to a criminal background check and credential/education verification. Up to 5 professional references will be requested at a later step in the recruitment process.

This position is eligible for on-campus and/or hybrid remote work within Iowa, with the majority of work time being on campus, and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location .
