Responsibilities:

The graduate student intern will work under the direction of experienced engineers and subject matter experts in the Advanced Concepts Office to support Digital Engineering capability development activities related to the integration of Exploration Mission system design capabilities into ACO's Dyreqt mission and vehicle analysis tool. The Intern can expect challenging assignments such as:

  • Integrating ACO's Excel-based Hab Sizer tool into the Dyreqt framework, developing a space habitat design toolbox.
  • Developing a model library of Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) components to enable advanced technology assessments and architecture trades.
  • Developing new methods for optimizing design solutions for various space mission architectures using OpenMDAO.

BS degree in Engineering or related field and current enrollment in an accredited graduate program is required. Degree from an ABET accredited institution is preferred.

Must be able to provide own transportation.

Position requirements are:

  • Skills and experience using the Python programming language and the OpenMDAO development framework is required.
  • Prior experience with the Dyreqt analysis tool and the ALSSAT Advanced Life Support Sizing Analysis Tool is highly desired.
  • General knowledge of launch vehicle and spacecraft systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate initiative and proactive abilities in building relationships with team members and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate the capability to plan and perform analyses independently and with a team.
  • Demonstrate strong technical writing and presentation skills to present data to customers.
  • Prior experience supporting MSFC ACO is highly desired.

Essential Functions:

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<5%)

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (20%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (70%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required ( <10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
