As a Senior Director Cancer Research Operations I, Reporting to an Executive Director Research Operations, the Senior Director Research Operations I leads and manages the research operational activities of one large department, or multiple related departments or teams. Serves as the administrative leader for one or more research departments, programs, markets, and/or shared services. Manages multiple diverse groups with a moderate collective complexity. Leverages departmental and program leaders to manage component parts of the Research Enterprise.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Manages one large research department or multiple related or teams in a matrixed environment, the role acts as the liaison between researchers and research leaders and oversees all administrative aspects of research activities for their area. Sets priorities to assure that research is conducted efficiently, ethically, and in compliance with relevant regulations and guidelines and throughput is meeting service level expectations.

  • Works closely with research leaders to ensure service level expectations are managed and supported to align with research priorities. Provides key information and updates to inform research operation reviews. Creates and directs strategy and growth, implementation, research and shared services productivity, financial performance, compliance and risk mitigation, and continuous improvement for their research area.
  • Leads and manages people in a complex environment, setting meaningful goals and ensuring accountability in achievement. Selects top talent and builds leadership succession through development and coaching. Provide ongoing support and professional development opportunities for research team members. Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence within research operations.
  • Setting priorities for their area, leads delivery of services, programs and projects, develops and implements policies, procedures, standards and strategic plans for assigned research areas. Manages and allocates resources to align with business objectives for research area.
  • Plans and manages the financial operations for the assigned research areas, including budget development, expense and revenue analysis, evaluation of research support and shared services and development activities. Provides reporting to Research leadership as required.
  • In partnership with Executive Director Research Operations develops short and long-term research strategy. Manages team to ensure execution of the growth plan and programmatic development.
  • Drives research integrity by partnering with researchers to ensure compliance with relevant policies, regulations, and ethical standards governing research activities.
  • The level of the Senior Director Research Operations (I or II) is determined by complexity guidelines and factors managed by Enterprise Research. Enterprise Research approves leveling of each Research administrative leader in partnership with the Caregiver Office.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Bachelor's degree in in Business, Healthcare Administration, or related field required

  • Master's Degree in Business, Healthcare Administration or related field preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of professional and functionally relevant experience with 6 years of demonstrated leadership and management experience is required. A master's degree in a relevant field may offset up to two years of the experience requirement.

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Senior leadership experience within healthcare organizations, preferably in cancer centers or large hospital systems.
  • Prefer experience managing large, complex healthcare programs, including budget management, strategic planning, and operational oversight.
  • Prefer strong background in research administration and grant management.
  • Experience with NIH funding, is preferred.
  • Prefer demonstrated expertise in knowledge of accreditation standards, and compliance requirements related to cancer research.

Physical Requirements:
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a personal computer and other office and laboratory equipment.
  • Must be able to sit for one hour or more.
  • Must be able to work under stressful conditions.

Personal Protective Equipment:
  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.


Pay Range

Minimum hourly: $53.90

Maximum hourly: $82.19

A successful candidate's actual compensation will be determined after taking factors into consideration such as the candidate's work history, experience, skill set, and education.
