2025 Summer Intern - Translational Medicine, Oncology

Department Summary

The Translational Medicine function at Genentech has a vision to transform patient care through borderless, innovative, and rigorous translational science that will catalyze the development of new medicines, accelerate drug development timelines, and discover new therapeutic strategies. To fulfill our vision, we recruit talented and highly motivated scientists to develop and execute innovative biomarker and diagnostic strategies to drive clinical development through all phases of the portfolio, and conduct foundational disease-oriented translational research to maximize our scientific and clinical impact.

We seek highly motivated and talented interns to contribute to translational research efforts in oncology.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, onsite.

The Opportunity:
  • Hands-on, lab-based position responsible for designing and executing in vitro experiments for gene editing or gene expression induction in various cell types.
  • Design and execute experiments to perform CRISPR genomic screening to identify, evaluate, and validate novel therapeutic targets derived from our clinical biomarker analyses.
  • Communicate and present results to a diverse group of scientists across the organization.


Program Highlights
  • Intensive 12-weeks, full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

Who You Are

Education:
  • Currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree in a relevant field

Preferred majors:
  • Cell / Molecular / Biochemistry / Genetics / Cancer Biology / Biotechnology or a related field.

Other Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience in lab-based research projects and expertise with molecular biology assays, cell-based and biochemical assays, biochemistry assays, genome engineering techniques, and multi-omic assays.
  • 2+ years of lab research experience in relevant academic settings.
  • Deep knowledge of cancer biology and oncogenic signaling pathways.
  • Ability to think critically, demonstrated problem-solving skills, a team-player mindset, and an enthusiastic approach to learning.
  • Experience with FACS and CRISPR/Cas9 cell engineering.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position of California is $22.00 - $55.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
