Department Summary

The Patient Centered Outcomes Research (PCOR) vision is: To provide evidence that improves lives through patient-focused outcomes. We achieve this by developing measurement strategies that integrate the patient perspective into drug development.

Through the collection of clinical outcomes assessments (COAs) such as patient reported outcome (PRO), clinician-reported outcomes (ClinRO), observer-reported outcome (ObsRO), and performance outcome (PerfO) measures, we work to capture the patient experience while to better understand patients' perspective of treatment and disease burden.

The patient viewpoint is increasingly important in drug approval and reimbursement decisions as health authorities, payers, patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers seek additional evidence of treatment benefit.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco,onsite.

The Opportunity:

We are seeking dedicated and enthusiastic interns to join the PCOR team for a summer internship. Under the supervision of your PCOR mentor, you will support research efforts to help bring new medicines to patients. The therapeutic areas the PCOR team covers include oncology, immunology, infectious disease, ophthalmology, neuroscience, and rare diseases.
  • Research (e.g., literature searches/reviews, review and pooling of concepts from internal market research, medical affairs, and disease area strategy team documents)
  • Documentation and strategy (e.g., context update, disease area strategies)
  • Preparation for and attendance/support with PCOR Scientist mentors (e.g., study management team meetings, clinical science team meetings)
  • Review and design of qualitative research
  • Review/analysis of clinical trial data
  • Business critical documents (e.g., FDA/EMA documentation and filings)
  • System/Process improvements

Program Highlights
  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship

Who You Are
  • Education: Students engaged in a graduate degree (e.g. Masters, Doctorate or equivalent).
  • Preferred majors: Epidemiology, public health, psychology, pharmacy, or similar degree with interest in patient research and research methods.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel programs
  • Strong written communication and presentation skills, solid interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated project management skills, leadership skills, interest and hunger to learn new things. A person that takes initiative, welcomes problems as challenges; finds solutions to technical problems; and that can identify and raise challenges
  • Clear goal setting and work planning that results in demonstrated deliverables


In PCOR we partner cross-functionally with other departments such as regulatory, market access, health economics, biostatistics, clinical data management, clinical science, and clinical operations. You will have the opportunity to see first-hand how these diverse functions come together in a collaborative team environment to solve complex problems. You will develop the project management and technical skills necessary to support the PCOR team and will have the opportunity to put these skills into practice.

At the conclusion of the internship you will be required to give a presentation to the department. Along with the submission of your CV, a cover letter is optional.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position of California is $21.00 - $50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
