Prevention Specialists will provide quality evidence-based prevention services and support services to Substance Awareness Center referrals, schools, community partners, and the community at large.

Responsibilities of Prevention Specialist:

  • Deliver evidenced based prevention curriculum with fidelity in the classroom, small groups, and through individual sessions
  • Collect pre and post-test surveys
  • Conduct intake and orientation for indicated prevention youth.
  • Complete all programmatic documentation including log entries, PBPS/CPG data entries, and client record entries in accordance with SAC policy
  • Provide technical assistance (i.e., providing substance abuse information, etc.) to all school partners requesting such.
  • Participate in scheduled staff meetings and report progress as well as areas of concern.
  • Participate in Community Coalition (SAFIR) meetings and implementation of coalition activities.
  • Deliver prevention services in compliance with licensing standards and SAC policy
  • Maintain accurate records of service delivery
  • Provide information for grant reports as requested by the CEO.
  • Other special projects as assigned

Required Competencies of Prevention Specialist:

  • Monthly / programmatic benchmarks will be met documented and reviewed.
  • Effective group facilitation – observation.
  • Program/curricula presentation – direct observations, satisfaction surveys and year-end reports.
  • Ability to provide quality services to schools, agencies, and community coalition– satisfaction surveys, customer feedback, observation.
  • Accurate weekly PBPS/CPG data entry/log sheets, billing and documentation – monthly reviews.
  • Yearly grants goals are met or exceeded – yearly review.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Effective communication skills including interactive public speaking and active listening skills to effectively advocate for the Substance Awareness Center, their mission statement and their programs.
  • Computer literate and able to work with Microsoft Office and its network components.
  • Fluid communication skills that foster teamwork and high morale. Further, must be able to promote services to schools, families and communities.
  • Strong presentation and group facilitation skills.
  • Knowledge of adolescent development.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, preferably in human service, and/or education or related field -or- related experience required.
  • Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) or Certified Prevention Professional (CPP) is preferred; must be willing to work towards certification within specified timeframes
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen and DCF background screening.
  • If in recovery, two years of uninterrupted sobriety required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work extended hours which may include some evenings and weekend programs/events.
  • Must be able to travel and deliver public presentations that can be both lengthy and include multiple sessions.
  • Able to lift 25 pounds.

Pay: $44,000.00 per year
