Job Description

Are you a transitioning servicemember eligible for the VDVS Virginia SkillBridge program? Are you looking to continue your career in the Cybersecurity field or break into the field? Then come aboard as AMERICAN SYSTEMS' next Virginia SkillBridge Program Cyber Intern! This approx. six month Virginia SkillBridge Internship will give you invaluable training and experience in the Cybersecurity career field as you transition to the civilian workforce!

As a Virginia SkillBridge Cybersecurity Intern, you will:

  • Be prepared for security-related positions to include Assistant Facility Security Officer (AFSO), Assistant Contractor Program Security Officer (ACPSO), and like positions.

A week in the life of the Virginia SkillBridge Cybersecurity Intern includes:

Policy, Compliance Monitoring, & Auditing
Conduct periodic system assessments to ensure compliance with system authorization.
RMF, Configuration Management, & Security Controls
Review & maintain RMF certification & accreditation packages.
Conduct security assessments & design, develop, & implement appropriate security controls.
Assess the effectiveness of security controls & update existing security controls.
Security Systems Analysis, Design, Implementation, & Management
Install, administer, & troubleshoot network security solutions.
Configure & support security tools, such as firewalls & anti-virus software.
Update software with the latest security patches & ensure the proper defenses are present.
Vulnerability Testing, Risk Analysis, & Security Assessments
Perform vulnerability scans & enforce remediation actions.
Perform security analyses of operational & developmental environments, threats, vulnerabilities, & internal interfaces.
Security Monitoring, Testing, & Reporting
Plan, implement, upgrade, & monitor security measures.
Employ log monitoring, network traffic analysis, & implementing IDS & IPS.
Provide timely detection, identification, & alert of possible attacks/intrusions, anomalous activities, & misuse activities & distinguish these from benign activities.
Incident Response & Recovery
Operate Security Information & Event Management (SIEM) technology; collect & analyze log & event data; & detect, alert, & report on potential security threats or incidents.
Respond to security incidents, including computer security breaches & viruses.
Cyber Threat Analysis, Intelligence, & Defense
Apply cyber threat intelligence to address malware threats, phishing campaigns, & APTs.
Use cyber defense tools & collect data to analyze events & mitigate threats.
Analyze identified malicious activity to determine weaknesses exploited, exploitation methods, & effects on system & information.

Job Requirements

  • REQUIRED: Candidates must be eligible to participate in a SkillBridge program. If you are unsure if you are eligible, please speak with your Unit Commander or Transition Coordinator.
  • Must have 180 days of military service or fewer remaining prior to your date of discharge and have at least 180 continuous days of active military service (as defined by the DOD SkillBridge eligibility requirements)
  • Must have approval from your unit commander to participate in a SkillBridge program (as defined by the DOD SkillBridge eligibility requirements)
  • Top Secret/SCI Clearance required
