We are looking for a Data Engineering Manager to lead a team responsible for innovating with one of Microsoft's largest data sets. As part of the Consumer Sales Organization, you will drive the development of data-driven solutions to ensure Microsoft's success in the digital retail space. You will lead a team of highly skilled experts, managing both full-time employees and service providers through managed service agreements.

In this role, you will be responsible for pulling together the data, tools, and insights necessary for Microsoft to excel. You will thrive in a dynamic, matrixed environment, working closely with cross-functional teams including engineering, project/product management, finance, legal, privacy, security, and other key business partners.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.

Specifically, this position supports United States federal, state, and/or local government agency customers and is subject to certain citizenship-based restrictions where required or permitted by applicable law. Additional or Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of people management experience, showcasing effective leadership and coaching skills in a matrixed, cross-functional environment with an empathetic and decisive management style
  • Proficiency in managing and optimizing data pipelines across relational, streaming, and unstructured data systems.
  • Understanding of modern data platforms and architectures for analytics and AI.
  • Ability to make informed decisions regarding resource allocation, project prioritization, and risk management.


Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Data Engineering PM team to execute data engineering requirements for the Microsoft Webstore, Gaming Store, and Client Store.
  • Partner with Data Analytics and Data Science teams to develop pipelines that support Analyst, Marketing, and Sales functions.
  • Lead and mentor a diverse team of engineers, fostering career development and providing clear direction.
  • Manage multiple data pipelines for analytics, experimentation, activation, and AI initiatives.
  • Engage with cross-functional teams, including finance, legal, privacy, and security, to ensure alignment with business goals and compliance standards.
  • Assess business impact and prioritize projects based on potential success and resource availability.
  • Integrate new tools and technologies, such as Microsoft Fabric and Adobe Customer Journey Analytics, to enhance data pipeline capabilities.
  • Drive innovation in digital retail by leveraging advanced data storage and processing platforms.
  • Provide clarity in ambiguous situations and make strategic decisions under uncertainty.
  • Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, simplifying complex data concepts for broader understanding.
  • Pursue knowledge to enhance the availability, reliability, and performance of products, while promoting consistency in monitoring and operations.
