About The Organization

The Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) has flourished and grown into a major international non-government organization representing approximately 180,000 Inuit of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Chukotka (Russia). The organization holds Consultative Status II at the United Nations.

Job Summary

This is a 6-month contract with the possibility of being extended or becoming a permanent role. The Environment and Research Coordinator is a mid-level position. The coordinator will be responsible for monitoring, developing and advancing the organization s activities in the issue areas of wildlife, environment, biodiversity and research.

Duties

Under the direction of the Senior Science Policy Advisor, the Environment and Research Coordinator will coordinate the activities of ICC Canada as identified in the ICC Operational Plan and the current GA Declaration. The Environment and Research Coordinator will also enhance the current ICC Canada circumpolar presence on the issues of research, environment, biodiversity and wildlife and give advice to ICC on these issues. An understanding and awareness of the broader circumpolar Arctic policy and research landscape is necessary to effectively do this job.

Key Responsibilities

Research

  • Represent ICC s on research committees such as the ArcticNet Research Management Committee and Inuit Advisory Committee.
  • Bring circumpolar Arctic research activities and priorities forward as appropriate and advance ICC internationally.
  • Work with the regional representatives to enhance Inuit led research and implement the national Inuit Policy on Research (NISR).
  • Other Arctic research related activities.

Environment/Wildlife/Biodiversity

  • Monitor and participate in a variety of wildlife, biodiversity and environmental fora that have an impact or relate to the Arctic and Inuit interests.
  • Consult regionally and with other ICC offices (in Greenland, Alaska, Russia) to develop Inuit positions (technical/research and political).
  • Work closely with the Canadian national Inuit organization, the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK), and the Inuit wildlife group and other relevant National Inuit Committees to ensure appropriate communication and consistency between national and international positions taken by Inuit.
  • Develop and coordinate Inuit specific international activities, projects and further Inuit research and political interests on wildlife.
  • Support and advise Inuit leaders on international issues that affects wildlife important to Inuit.

Other Related Activities

  • In order to fulfil the mandate of the job of Environment and Research Coordinator, the individual will, from time to time, develop and make oral, written, and visual (through power point, for example) presentations to other ICC staff, government officials, potential donors, and other.
  • The Coordinator will travel when required.
  • The Coordinator will develop fundraising strategies and actively fundraise, in cooperation with the Senior Science Policy Advisor and others from time to time.
