This job announcement will be accepting candidate submissions until 07 November 2024. The Air Force Office of Scientific Research, AFOSR/RTA, seeks to hire a senior-level, DR-IV Principal Materials Engineer in Arlington, VA.

The incumbent will manage a fundamental basic research program, the Multiscale Multifunctional Structures & Systems Portfolio, with expertise in the areas of integrating newly emerging classes of structural load carrying materials, novel functional material systems or devices, programmable meta-architectures, intelligent subsystems, multiscale composite interfaces, stimuli responsive surfaces. Through a variety of means, including formal presentations, the incumbent provides expert advice and technical information to higher echelons of the Air Force and to other military and government activities, thus requiring full knowledge of the technical content.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Evaluating white papers and full proposals submitted to AFOSR in the areas of experimental techniques, modeling, analyzing, and understanding materials and processing issues of load-bearing lightweight aerospace structural materials at multi-scale levels in emerging and novel material concepts.
  • Advising and assisting the Division Chief in the selection of proposals.
  • Providing expert advice in the broad area of aerospace lightweight structural materials.
  • Interact with Air Force Research Laboratory specialists in the following disciplines: structural mechanics, chemistry, computational and material sciences.
  • Prepares and presents appropriate briefings on programs and research interests at professional conferences and workshops. Organizes and conducts technical workshops on topics related to uncovering the fundamental basic research issues in the area of structural materials and systems.

Required Qualifications

  • One year of specialized experience at broadband level III or GS-14 meets the minimum qualification requirement for broadband level DR-IV.
  • The required one year of specialized experience may be gained from qualifying for private sector service, military service, another qualifying pay plan, or the Lab Demo personnel system, separately or combined.
  • In addition, US Office of Personnel Management (OPM) individual occupational requirements for professional engineering positions and Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Professional and Scientific Positions. Materials Engineering Series 0806

Desired Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent highly desired
  • Experience working with or within the Department of Defense
  • Experience in the following subject areas is encouraged: experimental and computational concepts of multiscale structural design based on multi-physics models from molecular dynamics to structural predictions, materials and processing issues such as additive and convergent manufacture for hybrid systems, and autonomous life cycle management for diagnosis/self-learning/prognosis.
  • Cultivates and sustains a professional environment of cooperation, cohesion, and teamwork
  • The ability to work across functional teams to gather information
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
