This position is highly analytical, involving data analyses, modeling and reporting functions including but not limited to 1) Validating imbalance market settlement data and making recommendations to improve market interactions; 2) Aggregating multiple data sources to calculate a profit and loss of bilateral trades and imbalance market participation; 3) Spreadsheet creation and analyses; 4) Following market issues and representing AEPCO and its Members in regional working groups; 5) Understanding AEPCO's Member energy allocation program to determine how best to incorporate imbalance energy and market trades; 6) Reviewing congestion hedging settlements and making recommendations to improve performance, and; 7) Other analyses and skills as may be necessary for departmental success.

This position will work closely with ACES related to front office activities related to our Members and Customers. Level III Analysts will be able to work on tasks independently and support more junior employees performing related tasks. The ability to think dynamically and independently under pressure is essential.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Economics, Mathematics or another technical field.
  • 5 or more years of power system experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of the power industry, generation operations, and energy trading.
  • In-depth knowledge of balancing, interchange, and transmission operations.
  • In-depth knowledge of EIM operations and settlement, especially CAISO and SPP.
  • Experience with production cost modeling with EnCompass or similar.
  • Solid knowledge of congestion hedging in organized markets.
  • Solid knowledge of transmission rights, Open Access Transmission Tariffs (OATT), and the Open Access Sametime Information System (OASIS).
  • Solid knowledge of Energy Trading and Risk Management software, especially MCG and Power Settlements SettleCore.
  • Solid knowledge of meter data systems and data historians including eDNA, PI, MV90, or similar.
  • Basic understanding of Independent System Operator (ISO) and/or Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) market design and tariffs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and to work in teams.
  • Experience with analytical software and programming in Excel, Power BI, VBA, R Suite, or similar.
  • Ability to work independently, with a high degree of deductive reasoning, creativity and problem solving.

ESSENTIAL and MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Analyzing CAISO EIM and SPP WEIS operation and settlement data to validate accuracy and identify irregularities for further analysis.
  • Completing market settlement dispute justifications and completing the dispute process, including CAISO CIDI tickets.
  • Calculating profit and loss of bilateral trades and organized market participation.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve market performance and making recommendations.
  • Tracking CAISO and SPP issues and actively participating in User Group meetings.
  • Providing expertise in energy accounting and imbalance calculations to support Member billing and business practice development.
  • Analyzing CAISO and SPP congestion hedging settlement data to validate accuracy; identifying opportunities to improve performance and making recommendations.
  • Providing technical expertise on new market evaluation, including zonal and nodal day-ahead and Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) studies.
