Job Description

As a Patient Safety Healthcare Coordinator, you will:

  • Analyze patient safety events and communicate with hospital leadership, clinical teams, and Risk Management to drive change towards high reliability and zero harm.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary teams, including physicians and senior leaders, to achieve patient safety and improvement strategies at UMMC.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate, educate, manage projects, and facilitate safety initiatives.
  • Work with UMMC departments and MMCIP on risk reduction strategies within a Just Culture framework.
  • Collaborate with leadership, staff, and physicians to implement safety and improvement activities.
  • Review patient records and prepare summaries for discussion and problem-solving.
  • Develop and update policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with UMMC standards and regulations.
  • Manage reports to regulatory agencies like the Joint Commission and Office of Healthcare Quality.
  • Build strong relationships with key medical staff.
  • Guide Unit-Based Safety Clinicians (UBSCs) and Unit Dyads.
  • Serve as a key resource for patient safety to clinical teams and support staff.


Principal Responsibilities:

  • Assist in coordinating activities to achieve zero harm.
  • Direct the patient safety program with leadership:
    • Coordinate root cause analysis (RCA) and follow-up action plans.
    • Partner with UMMC leadership to advance a culture of patient safety.
    • Lead efforts to improve event reporting and response to near-miss events.
    • Use data to drive patient safety improvements.
    • Communicate and educate on patient safety strategies.
    • Develop and implement safety education for staff.
    • Serve as a consultant for unit managers and clinical representatives.
    • Oversee the Event Reporting System, identifying trends and nominating Great Catch awards.
    • Investigate patient safety events and trends.
    • Participate in in-service education and regulatory compliance.
    • Conduct proactive risk assessments and chart reviews.
    • Implement the Safety Culture Assessment survey and debrief results.
    • Lead or participate in key hospital committees focused on patient safety.
    • Assist with regulatory reporting and ensure compliance with standards.
    • Manage and lead patient safety projects.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Preferred: Master’s degree in nursing or related health science field.
  • Required: Current licensure in a related field (e.g., RN, physical therapy).
  • Required: 3-5 years of experience in patient safety in an acute care facility; experience in an Academic Medical Center is preferred.


REQUIRED Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Understanding of federal, state, and local regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Quality Improvement: Expertise in quality improvement measurement, analysis, and strategies.
  • Leadership: Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Problem-Solving: Proficiency in problem-solving, analytical skills, and implementing new programs.
  • Communication: Highly effective oral and written communication skills for interacting with hospital personnel, administrators, clinical staff, and external agencies.
  • Project Management: Ability to manage projects and programs with limited supervision, demonstrating initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Collaboration: Ability to develop collaborative programs and projects with other disciplines, contributing to team effectiveness and facilitating improvements.
  • Technical Skills: General knowledge of PC and database management software.
  • Presentation Skills: Strong presentation skills, including executive-level presentations
