HJF is seeking a Analytical Toxicologist 4 to serve as a Deputy Chief of Lab Operations or Supervisor of Method Development performing analyses on biological specimens in support of he Defense Health Agency's (DHA) Armed Forces Medical Examiner System (AFMES) at Dover Airforce Base in Delaware.

AFMES is a Tri-Service organization, comprised of administrative S-Staff and three (3) integrated Divisions (Forensic Pathology Investigation, DoD DNA Operations, and Forensic Toxicology) whose overall mission is to provide comprehensive and innovative medico-legal services worldwide. AFMES provides mission support to the DoD in the fields of human remains identification from both current and previous conflicts; forensic toxicology; medico-legal death investigations; forensic DNA analytical services; mass- fatality specimen collection and management services; and human reference specimen collection, cataloging, archival, and retrieval repository services.

We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

This position is contingent on contract award.

Responsibilities

  • Ability to Direct laboratory operations, schedule and supervise analysts, technicians, clerical and administrative support personnel, introduce ideas for method development and improvement, implement research and method development ideas post completion and serve as an expert in the area of Forensic Toxicology.
  • Will perform review of analytical data; make analytical and administrative decisions based on scientific evidence and case history for final case review.
  • Duties may include providing screening and confirmation data, quantitative data, full scan mass spectrum, corrective action measures, SOP revisions, SOP updates, SOP improvements, final tier data review authority, participate (as an analyst) in research and method development programs, complete and implement research and method improvements and perform any special testing as directed by laboratory management.
  • Performs analyses on biological specimens
  • Serves as subject matter expert to the military drug testing community as well as the AFMES postmortem mission.
  • Will Lead research and analytical projects, supervise and review data of junior personnel, schedule personnel and equipment resources, introduce ideas for method development based on analytical challenges experienced within AFMES and the postmortem/human performance drug testing community.
  • Will implement research and method development ideas post completion.
  • Will Serve as a subject matter expert and consultant for the DoD Military Drug Testing Program.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • PhD degree in toxicology, biochemistry or the physical or biological sciences from an accredited university required with at least three (3) years' experience in forensic toxicology;
  • OR have a Master's degree in toxicology, biochemistry, chemistry or the physical or biological sciences from an accredited university and at least four (4) years' experience in forensic toxicology

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • ABFT certification is preferred, but not required, for the supervisor and deputy supervisor.
  • Will be required to interact with senior level leadership such as Division Chiefs, Chief of Staff, Director and Deputy Director AFMES, and high-level military and civilian medical, health care and technical personnel.
  • Desired knowledge and experience in filing techniques; preparing and editing technical or general documentation using various software packages such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel and Windows; transcription of documents, data entry, and related casework files.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and supervise others.
  • ship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret Clearance.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $88,600-$150,800. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
