About the role:

The Microsoft HoloLens Display team is currently looking for a Senior Opto-Mechanical E ngineer. The team s mission is to design world class and inventive AR devices for use in next generation military and first responder market segments. In this role the primary responsibilities will include working with a team of Optical Engineers and scientists to develop and build robust see-thru optical AR glasses .

This role requires ability to work and collaborate on-site at our labs in Redmond, WA.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Science, Optical Engineering or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience such as mechanical engineering design

o OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Science, Optical Engineering or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience

o OR Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Science, Optical Engineering or related field

o OR equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years' experience with product design, including direct demonstrated experience with mechanical assemblies, opto-mechanical design and lab experience.
  • Experience with CAD, Solidworks, Zenax or similar environments

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Science, Optical Engineering or related field AND 8+ years related technical engineering experience

o OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Science, Optical Engineering or related field AND 6+ years related technical engineering experience

o OR Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Science, Optical Engineering or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience

o OR equivalent experience.

  • 7+ years' experience with general mechanical design
  • Experience with head mounted displays.
  • Demonstrated experience in FEA ( Finite Element Analysis) modeling tools, including performing structural, shock, STOP analysis.
  • Experience with complex, tight tolerance mechanical design. Highly proficient in tolerance analysis of complex systems, including use of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T). Must be able to show examples.
  • Prior experience in designing optical subassemblies, including design of optical mounts (lenses, mirrors, sensors, prisms, windows).
  • Experience with optical coatings.
  • Electro-mechanics experience: PCBA ( Printed circuit board assembly) and FPCA ( flex circuit board assembly) development.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills


Mechanical Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.

Responsibilities

  • D eveloping complex display systems that integrat e mechanical and optical components.
  • T ranslat ing optical requirements and sensitivities into mechanical requirements .
  • Equipment , process flow , and supply chain development.
  • Collaborat ion with partner teams (especially Optics Engineering, ID ( industrial design) , sensors, and other Mechanical Engineers) to design and integrate subsystem s .
  • De velop and evaluate opto- mechanical designs with considerations of tolerance and stability over environmental storag e/ operation ranges and reliability requirements.
  • Resolving reliability failures th r ough test and analysis.
  • Driv ing definition of mechanical calibration procedures for various assembly and test stations .
  • Building and execution of test plans to understand and resolve yield, performance, and reliability issues.
