Carpenter Co. has an opening for a Research Chemist at our Reinhart Technical Center in Richmond, Virginia. This position is responsible for creating formulated polyurethane systems for rigid foam, flexible molded foam, prepolymer, and/or elastomer end-use applications. This position requires good laboratory practices, including thorough recording of experimental work and project information tracking.

As the successful candidate, you will be expected to support the technical functions of the Polyurethane Systems Sales organization through laboratory efforts and interactions with the sales team and customers.

Your Additional Responsibilities As a Research Engineer Will Include

  • Laboratory support for outside Polyurethane Systems Division
  • Maintain organized files and manage project timelines
  • Support new business opportunities through production trials at customer sites
  • Formulate and support manufacturing for production of polyurethane systems at internal Chemical Blending sites
  • Work with process engineers to operate large-scale equipment for product scale-up testing
  • Create and maintain technical data for new or modified products
  • Work with other team members on collaborative projects

Skills / Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or Materials Science with appropriate coursework or experience involving polymers
  • 5+ years of technical industry experience in polymer or material science discipline
  • Formulation knowledge of polyurethane foams and polyurethane elastomers
  • Experience formulating integral skin foam, engineered/technical foam, and automotive foams, preferred
  • Mechanical aptitude with good verbal/written communication skills
  • Up to 50 percent travel is required
