We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to join our team as Principal Software Engineer in Enterprise Platform Services (EPS) Division.

The Principal Software Engineer will help architect and drive the strategic direction for Mayo Clinic Cloud (MCC). MCC is a 10-year strategic partnership between Mayo Clinic and Google to redefine how healthcare is delivered and accelerate the pace of healthcare innovation through digital technologies. MCC includes our portfolio of enterprise data sets, data-centric clinical and analytic applications, and self-service customer-facing platforms.. The platform leverages cloud computing, big data, mobile, data science, data warehousing, machine learning using state of the art software development applications and frameworks. Our Software Engineers ensure that these cloud-based micro-services adhere to uptime and accuracy targets, are resilient, and scale as data volumes and traffic increase. They work closely with the data engineering, platform, and solutions teams to develop applications as required to benefit our practice and patients.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • In partnership with Product Management team, will help define and communicate technical and architectural vision for the Data and AI solution train
  • Provide leadership in the design, selection, and application of information systems resources
  • Provides consultative services to executive and physician leadership in addition to departments/divisions and leadership committees.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Enterprise Platform Services Divisional Architectural Board.
  • Represent the Enterprise Platform Services Division to, and participate in, Cloud Center of Excellence, and institutional committees and groups.
  • Develop and foster strategies and directions that support cross-division goals and objectives.
  • Serve as Secretary, Assistant Secretary, or member of IT for institutional or IT committees.
  • Developing services around data warehousing, big data, cloud computing, business intelligence, analytics and machine learning.
  • Works closely with the Product Owners, Product Managers, Architects to translate requirements into code.
  • Participate in DevOps, Agile, continuous development and integration frameworks.
  • Programming in high-level languages such as Go, Python, Java etc.
  • Ensure all appropriate documentation of processes and source code is created and maintained.
  • Communicate effectively with peers, leaders, and customers throughout the organization.
  • Participate in expert level troubleshooting and resolve problems through root cause analysis, data and system investigation.
  • Contributes to design and architecture discussions with Principals and Architects.
  • Leads targeted cross-functional improvement efforts and mentors more junior software engineers.
  • Interpret internal or external issues and recommend solutions/best practices, solving complex problems with a broad perspective to identify solutions.
  • May lead functional teams or projects.
  • Ability to works independently, with guidance in only the most complex situations.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field with 10 years of experience as noted below; or Associate's Degree in Computer Science / Engineering or related field with 12 years of experience as noted below.

Top skills:

  • Cloud architecture experience
    • Google Cloud preferred; AWS/Azure considered
  • Healthcare data experience (HL7, FHIR, DICOM) or experience with other large cloud data warehouse in a highly regulated environment
  • AI/ML experience, especially with Generative AI/LLMs
  • Strong communicator able to coordinate between leadership, non-technical customers, and engineering staff

General qualifications:

  • Demonstrated problem solving and time management skills.
  • Possesses strong technical aptitude for designing and implementing software solutions.
  • Experience with modern application development frameworks.
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
  • Experienced with committee and consensus-managed, physician-led organization.
  • Requires skill in effective decision making and effective consensus management.
  • Deep hands-on technical expertise, excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Agile software development techniques.
  • Demonstrated history of continuing education in personnel and administrative processes.
  • Experience with personnel management, resource allocation, coaching and mentoring.
  • Experience working in healthcare technology.
  • Experience with managing both custom developed and vendor-supplied products and services.
  • Travel will be required for this position.

Licensure/Certification Required:

  • Google Cloud Certification is required in 2 years after accepting the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in computer science/engineering or related field with 6 years of experience preferred.
  • Ability to use a wide variety of open-source technologies and cloud-based services.
  • Experience in databases, analytics, big data systems or business intelligence products.
  • Experience building high-performance, highly available and scalable distributed systems.
  • Experience developing software for healthcare related industries.
