Axle is seeking a Laboratory Technician to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Institute on Aging (NIA) located in Bethesda, MD.

Overall Position Summary and Objectives

This position will support research projects at the Center for Alzheimer's and Related Dementias (CARD). The contractor will provide laboratory support to normalize DNA and RNA concentrations for next-generation sequencing, genotyping, and other studies. The position will also assist in reporting and presenting results and technical troubleshooting.


Deliverables:

Work Details:

  • Performs routine laboratory procedures to measure DNA/RNA concentrations, normalize DNA/RNA to set standards, and plate for sequencing, genotyping, or other protocols 1
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment needed to carry out research studies. 2
  • Store and process clinical research samples including human plasma and brain tissue. 3
  • Convey and discuss research results with team lab members. 4
  • Test new protocols and document results to assist in protocol development 5
  • Plans, executes, and arranges laboratory experiments, new techniques and procedures; and performs laboratory techniques relating to scientific research.

  • Operates laboratory machines and instruments; and prepares specimens and equipment for use.

  • Prepare materials and equipment for experiments.

  • Process and organize multiple samples simultaneously.

  • Work with a variety of routine and specialized laboratory instruments and equipment in the laboratory.

  • Ensure that all specimens and equipment necessary for experiments are available and in good order.

  • Performs sample management and storage.

  • Maintain thorough documentation of sample storage and processing to ensure samples are tracked correctly.

  • Analyzes, documents and reports on all procedures performed.

  • Update and maintain written laboratory record of the work.

  • Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies.

  • Ensure that supplies and consumables are ready and on hand as necessary for maximum efficiency in the laboratory.

  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments, glassware and equipment.

  • Assist with maintaining equipment and supplies

  • Plan execute and arrange laboratory experiments, new techniques and procedures; and performs laboratory techniques relating to scientific research.

  • Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies and initiates purchase orders.

  • Monitor and inventory routine laboratory supplies; ensure that supplies are stocked and organized.

  • Performs routine equipment maintenance.

  • Assist in troubleshooting and calibrating various laboratory equipment and instruments.

  • Plan execute and arrange laboratory experiments, new techniques and procedures; and performs laboratory techniques relating to scientific research.

  • Perform experiments on samples according to protocols.

  • Analyzes, documents and reports on all procedures performed and produces detailed reports for use by senior staff.

  • Record details of experimental procedures, results and protocols.

  • Prepare accumulated data and conclusions for publication in professional journals.

  • Performs advanced equipment maintenance.

  • Perform preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment.

  • Trains staff in performing routine laboratory tests and procedures.

  • Train new laboratory members in the correct use of equipment, application of techniques and laboratory protocols.

  • Provides insights and expertise and recommends new strategies and approaches.

  • Engage in problem solving as required to solve technical difficulties and to ensure steady progress, with a goal of providing high quality experimental data suitable for publication.
