Background and General Description
Located within the Development Economics Vice Presidency (DEC VPU), the Global Indicators Group (DECIG) produces primary data and analysis on private sector development, with emphasis on regulations, institutions, and policies that promote job creation, economic productivity, and gender equality. The data products aim for reliability, relevance, and comparability, within and across economies. The goal of the data, reports, and papers produced by the DECIG is to encourage and guide social and economic reforms that promote an efficient and fair business environment. The work also feeds into research produced by academia, international organizations, and think tanks, as well as policy advocacy conducted by civil society and non-governmental organizations.
DECIG produces cross-country comparable measures on a range of policy issues through the following programs: (a) Business Ready, the World Bank Group's corporate flagship measuring the business and investment climates in about 180 economies worldwide annually; (b) Enterprise Surveys, the world's most comprehensive comparable firm-level data for developing and developed economies; (c) Subnational Business Ready, which assesses the business and investment climates at subnational and regional levels within a country; and (d) Women, Business and the Law, the flagship assessing the global progress toward gender equality in 190 economies worldwide annually.
DECIG is looking for an Analyst with strong technical skills, writing skills, and analytical qualities to support the DECIG Director and the Front Office's quality assurance and process supervision work.
If the selected candidate is a current staff member at the World Bank Group with a Regular or Open-Ended appointment, they will retain their Regular or Open-Ended appointment. All others will be offered a two-year term appointment.
Roles and Responsibilities
Specifically, the Analyst will support the following tasks of the DECIG front office:
Research and Literature Review: Research, collect, and compile information from various sources. Conduct comprehensive literature reviews to gather relevant insights and support the unit's projects.
Data Analysis: Research quantitative and qualitative economic or statistical databases. Evaluate economic or statistical relationships in databases using Excel or Stata, and analyze economic data to identify trends and patterns.
Quality Assurance: Support the review of the DECIG units' outputs and assure their qualities, including draft reports, manuals, and guides. Provide detailed inputs for the units' analytics to enhance the overall quality and effectiveness of the outputs.
Methodology Development: Support the innovation and enhancement of existing projects by researching and developing new research plans and methodologies to significantly improve their effectiveness and impact.
New Project Development: Support the development of new projects, from creating frameworks and collecting data to conducting data analysis and assisting with other implementation work to ensure successful project execution.
Business Process Implementation: Support the overseeing of the implementation of business processes for DECIG-wide and unit-specific initiatives. Ensure these processes are executed efficiently and align with the unit's goals.
Data Visualization and Presentation: Create innovative and accurate figures/tables. Prepare professional PowerPoint presentations to effectively communicate research findings and analysis to various stakeholders.
Selection Criteria
Master's degree in economics (or a related discipline) with at least 2 years of relevant experience.
Deep technical expertise in economic analysis, with strong programming skills using Stata (and other statistical software) for data management, analysis, visualization, statistics, and reporting.
Excellent communication skills to write and speak persuasively, and the ability to present ideas clearly and concisely.
Strong conceptual and analytical skills, with the capacity to develop and peer review research briefs, contribute to analytical outputs, and synthesize complex issues into effective figures, tables, and notes.
Experience in supporting the development and implementation of knowledge projects, including literature reviews, methodology development, and data collection and analysis.
Breadth of knowledge in different private sector development areas, including business and investment climates, women's empowerment, and firm-level surveys, is desired.
Knowledge and familiarity with DECIG programs and processes is a plus.
Proven sense of initiative and results orientation, with a track record of delivering high-quality work.
Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment and across teams.
