The Applications Engineer will be responsible for supporting/leading the execution of Sales order fulfillment for power generation and propulsion systems driven by prime movers, including diesel/gas engines). The main focus of the Applications Engineer is integrating our products into the customer's application whether it s a Vessel or a Building. The Applications Engineer will be expected to take a project from conception through design and testing to onsite commissioning and all the necessary documentation on the way. Will also be responsible for inspecting and testing Electrical systems and mechanical systems (including Cooling, Fuel, Ventilation, and anything else needed for our equipment to function as per design), identifying hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repairs.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
In this lead/supervisory engineer role, you will work independently and handle the following tasks:
- Project Management: Oversee complex applications from start to completion, ensuring timely and budget-friendly delivery using PPG and third-party resources.
- Supervision & Development: Mentor and supervise junior engineers and field service engineers on specific tasks, fostering their growth and development.
- Consultation: Serve as a specialist applications engineer, providing expert advice and acting as a subject matter expert.
- Standards & Processes: Develop standards and processes to advance PPG Engineering, taking responsibility as a product champion for multiple products and applications.
- Application Development: Create and develop engine and power management applications.
- Work Planning: Plan and prepare work scopes, ensuring all necessary documentation, materials, equipment, and tools are available on-site.
- Inspection & Testing: Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and necessary adjustments or repairs, ensuring compliance with codes. Test and repair electrical circuits and electronic components.
- Troubleshooting & Installation: Troubleshoot issues with electrical machinery, systems, and components. Install or replace electrical and electronic components of equipment and systems.
- Design & Evaluation: Design and test integrated systems for engine safety controls on board and land-based applications. Direct engineering personnel in fabricating test control apparatuses and equipment. Determine procedures for testing products and systems.
- Operational Evaluation: Evaluate operational systems and recommend design modifications to eliminate malfunctions or meet changing system requirements.
- Parts Ordering: Create accurate parts orders according to OEM standards and organize additional supplies on-site.
- Documentation: Maintain documentation of manuals, descriptions, and electrical/electronic drawings. Report work scope, activities, findings, and conditions in accordance with manufacturer specifications and MSHS-ISO standards.
- Goal Achievement: Accomplish goals in line with company strategies and leadership competencies.
- Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements
Education and Experience Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or at least 5 years of relevant work experience in Marine Propulsion Systems, power generation, industrial automation, or a related industry.
- A valid US Driving License.
- A valid Passport.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
This role operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, printers, and scanners. While performing the duties of this job, you will be regularly required to talk or hear, frequently stand, walk, use hands or fingers to handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The job also involves lifting up to 50 pounds, standing for long periods, and being comfortable with kneeling, stooping, and working in cramped and uncomfortable positions. You should be prepared to twist and turn your body often and be open to working outdoors in various weather conditions.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Expertise in engine/generator/vessel and switchgear controls and integration.
- Experience with automation control systems and instrumentation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office business software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
- Demonstrated self-starting ability with strong interpersonal skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English required, Spanish is a plus).
- Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally.
- Knowledge or previous experience with MTU, Detroit Diesel, and Volvo Penta is a plus.
