Small business Controller - Baltimore, MD
We are seeking a finance and accounting leader to lead financial operations of a growing human services organization, transforming the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Maryland.
Having recently doubled in size, the organization needs someone ready to step into a key leadership role to manage financial responsibilities and ensure the company’s continued financial health. This role is very hands on as this would be the first hire of a build out of the Finance/Accounting team. Someone that has been in a Staff/Sr Accountant or even Accounting Manager role ready to have a seat at the leadership table of a small but growing organization. As part of this role, this individual will support other critical functions, including IT and HR. They will report directly to the CEO.

Key Responsibilities
Finance & Accounting
- Lead and manage all accounting functions: accounts payable, receivable, payroll, general ledger, bank reconciliations, and client accounts.
- Prepare and present accurate financial reports, including monthly, quarterly, and annual statements.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to develop and manage annual budgets.
- Work closely with external accountants on financial transactions, including expense reconciliation and client revenue tracking.
- Oversee audits and ensure compliance with financial regulations.
- Manage vendor contracts, maintaining cost-effectiveness and resolving any billing or payment issues.
- Provide key financial insights through reports, presentations, and KPI dashboards for leadership.
HR, IT & Administration
- Help Administer employee benefits and collaborate on performance reviews and professional development.
- Oversee IT tasks like account creation, hardware/software purchasing, setup, and training.
What We’re Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field (MBA/CPA preferred).
- 3-5 years of progressive experience in accounting and finance.
- Strong proficiency in financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls.
- Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite and accounting software like QuickBooks.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple priorities.
- Strong communicator with a high level of professionalism and integrity.
