About this role
We are seeking a dynamic and strategic finance leader to join Substack as the Head of FP&A and Strategic Finance. In this role, you will report directly to the CFO and lead all aspects of financial planning, analysis, and long-range strategic forecasting. You will be a key business partner to the leadership team, providing insights and guidance on business performance, growth strategies, and financial decision-making. This is a critical role for ensuring Substack scales efficiently and drives sustainable growth in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
Our cash compensation salary range for this role is $220,000-$260,000. Multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, determine final offer amounts and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Key Responsibilities:
Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A)
- Own the annual budget process, quarterly forecasts, and long-term financial planning
- Develop and maintain financial models that provide comprehensive insights into business performance
- Partner with department heads to provide financial guidance, ensuring alignment of financial goals with business strategies
- Drive variance analysis to ensure accountability and understanding of financial outcomes against plan
- Provide thought leadership on growth initiatives, resource allocation, and capital efficiency
- Lead scenario analysis and financial modeling to support key decisions, including M&A, partnerships and new product launches
- Collaborate closely with the business and product teams to analyze the financial impact of new features and services
- Provide ongoing analysis of competitive positioning and market opportunities
- Develop and enhance management reporting to provide key stakeholders with actionable insights
- Prepare materials and present financial results, forecasts, and strategic insights to the leadership team
- Partner with the accounting team to ensure the integrity of financial results and adherence to financial controls
- Work closely with operations, marketing, sales, and product teams to ensure that financial strategies are integrated into all aspects of the business
- Support fundraising activities, including preparation for potential future rounds, working closely with the CFO and external stakeholders
- 10+ years experience in FP&A, strategic finance, or investment banking with at least 3 years in a leadership role
- Experience at a high-growth tech company, preferably in consumer SaaS or Marketplace platforms
- Strong understanding of financial modeling, budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning
- Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to distill complex financial data into actionable insights
- Proven track record of partnering with senior leadership to drive financial and strategic outcomes
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization
- Advanced proficiency in financial systems and Excel
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, or related field
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and handle multiple priorities with a high degree of accuracy
- You have your own connection to Substack's mission and are game to work from Substack's SF HQ at least 2-3 days per week.
