Within the DNR, our Engineering Section plays a pivotal role, composed of passionate design and construction professionals who ensure the success of construction projects on DNR-managed lands.
We are excited to invite a talented Senior Architect to join our dynamic team! In this role, you will lead the design of diverse building projects from initial concept to final construction, collaborating closely with park managers and wildlife biologists. Your expertise will help shape a range of structures, including staff offices, storage and shop facilities, picnic shelters, campground facilities and park kiosks as well as other unique and diverse infrastructure that is used by thousands of visitors to DNR managed facilities.
You will also evaluate the condition of historic structures, including those built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, to develop thoughtful maintenance and renovation plans. Your work will not only preserve Iowa’s architectural heritage but also enhance the visitor experience across our parks and facilities.
This position will utilize skill sets and experience in CAD design and drafting, researching and developing cost estimates and bid documents and conducting site visit inspections to verify that contracted work meets specified requirements.

Applicants for this position must have a valid Professional Engineer license recognized by the State Board of Engineering Examiners or Certificate of Registration as a Professional Architect by the State Board of Architectural Examiners or be able to obtain one through reciprocity within six (6) months.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Civil, Mechanical, Architectural or a related engineering field, six years of full-time engineering experience in the design/construction of buildings, utilities, earthwork, or related facilities/structures, and possession of a valid Professional Engineer license recognized by the State Board of Engineering Examiners or Certificate of Registration as a Professional Architect by the State Board of Architectural Examiners;
OR
employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes two years of full-time work as a Facilities Engineer 1, and possession of a valid Professional Engineer license recognized by the State Board of Engineering Examiners or Certificate of Registration as a Professional Architect by the State Board of Architectural Examiners.

Additional Qualification Requirements
Within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority, certain employees in this class may be required to obtain a Fire Sprinkler Installer and Maintenance License in accordance with Chapter 100D, Iowa Code.

Essential Functions
- Application of the knowledge of the principles and practices of building and design of state building codes, rules, and regulations.
- Preparation of complete architectural plans and specifications for complex and advanced building facilities in the capacity of a professional architect.
- Fulfill the requirements of the Architect of Record for design and construction phases of a project.
- Estimating and scheduling using computers and specialized software.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing with DNR staff, management personnel, and other state and federal agencies.
- Read, interpret, and accurately obtain necessary information from architectural related source documents/data to document proposals, search for precedents, and seek out alternative procedures for architectural problems or projects.
- Work independently with consistent results and minimal supervision.
- Develop and foster teamwork, and plan and participate in the work of subordinate professional and technical assistants in the development of plans and specifications.
- Adjust to change, work pressures, or difficult situations without undue stress; travel across the state as required.
- Demonstrate initiative, a customer service focus and display high standards of ethical conduct.
