Description/Duties & Responsibilities

The City of Santa Clarita is committed to providing a challenging and meaningful work experience for college students. The City offers unique opportunities for students to gain hands-on and in-depth experience in a variety of disciplines related to local, regional, state, and federal government operations. We provide real world work assignments, which provide interns the opportunity to work side-by-side with professional City staff committed to teamwork and providing superior municipal services to the community of Santa Clarita.

This opportunity will select two candidates. The City Clerk's Office intern will work on projects relating to the work performed in a municipal clerk's office, including agenda and records management, standard operating procedures, and elections. The Administrative Services Admin intern will support financial and administration projects, including data analytics, financial research, and budget tracking.

SALARY

$19.31 - $24.46/hour (Undergrad Level)

$25.77 - $30.92/hour (Graduate Level)

This position may average 20-30 hours per week. Expected duration of this internship is from October 2024 to June 2025, but may end earlier or be extended depending on needs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with budget analysis, monitoring, and forecasting
  • Conduct financial research and data verification
  • Conduct research on applicable federal, state, and local regulations
  • Draft, proof and prepare communications, memos, handouts, reports, spreadsheets, and presentations
  • Analyze and prepare recommendations related to process efficiency
  • Attend various weekly, monthly, and quarterly meetings
  • Collaborate with various staff, benchmark cities, and other agencies to obtain information on assigned projects
  • May provide administrative support and respond to resident questions and complaints, as needed

Education and Experience

If you are a current undergraduate student or recent graduate in the fields of Public Administration, Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or a related field and are interested in gaining meaningful, hands-on work experience at the local government level, this may be the program for you.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Excellent oral and written communications
  • Knowledge of research techniques, survey methods, and data collection
  • General understanding of governmental organizations and municipal operations
  • General understanding of budget and financial analysis
  • Computer experience, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Flexibility and ability to handle multiple priorities
  • Ability to foster effective working relationships with all levels of staff and the community
  • The ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, and documents weighing up to 25 pounds
