Major Duties Include:

  • Collects daily snow, avalanche, and weather observations from avalanche paths affecting Glacier National Park roads. Records snow, avalanche, and weather observations in database/computer files.
  • Evaluates National Weather Service and Natural Resource Conservation Service products and data from automated mountain weather stations for inclusion in the avalanche forecasts.
  • Conducts field snow stability tests and observations, and in conjunction with other observations from field personnel, uses own judgement to independently interpret and evaluate snow stability. Issues daily avalanche hazard forecasts and warnings, which are distributed via email and briefings to park personnel.
  • Using their own judgement and experience, the incumbent determines when avalanche conditions have changed sufficiently to recommend a change in existing avalanche hazard ratings.
  • Serves as an avalanche spotter/ guard for snow removal crews, and in the event of an avalanche accident, acts as first responder for rescues.
  • In the event of avalanche accidents, the incumbent prepares detailed reports of the accident which include snow stability and avalanche information, facts and observations concerning the conditions leading up to the accident, the accident, and the rescue or recovery operations.
  • Develops and teaches avalanche safety training classes to the snow removal crews using slides, videos, on-site training, and lectures. Experience and knowledge of crews supported may vary greatly.
  • Works to develop an Avalanche Safety Plan for the spring opening of roads in Glacier National Park by evaluating protocols for hazard forecasts and road operations, mapping avalanche paths and events, and providing other information regarding avalanche hazard as needed.
Starting at $23.49 Per Hour (GS 7)
