The Entry-Level Highway Construction Safety Assistant plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of personnel working on highway construction projects. Working under the supervision of experienced safety professionals, this role involves various tasks aimed at promoting and maintaining a safe work environment. The primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assisting in the implementation and enforcement of safety policies and procedures as per regulatory standards and company protocols.
- Conducting regular inspections of construction sites to identify potential hazards, safety violations, and areas for improvement.
- Collaborating with project managers, engineers, and construction workers to address safety concerns and develop effective safety solutions.
- Participating in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training sessions to educate workers on safe work practices and emergency procedures.
- Assisting in the investigation of accidents, incidents, and near misses, and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Maintaining accurate records of safety inspections, incident reports, and training documentation.
- Distributing personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensuring its proper use and maintenance by workers.
- Monitoring compliance with safety regulations and company policies, intervening when necessary to address non-compliance issues.
- Conducting safety audits and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and develop strategies for mitigation.
- Assisting in the preparation of safety reports, presentations, and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional certification or coursework in occupational health and safety is preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify potential safety hazards.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate safety procedures and guidelines to diverse audiences.
- Basic understanding of construction processes and familiarity with common construction safety practices.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications such as MS Office Suite.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to changing safety regulations and industry standards.
- Physical ability to perform site inspections and walk long distances on uneven terrain.
- Prior experience in a construction or safety-related role is an advantage but not required.
- Clean DMV record is required.
- Bilingual is a plus
