Primary Care Staff Physician (PACT Provider)

  • Recommended to cover 1 panel of patients (panels may be shared for part-time providers)
  • Physician may be asked to work at more than one PVAMC site (i.e., combination of the PVAMC and the CBOCs)
  • Physician may be required to work extended hours or on a weekend if the clinic is open during these non-administrative hours

Performs the following tasks during the clinic visit:
  • Reviews information from outside providers
  • Conducts history and physical exam
  • Assesses patient's clinical condition
  • Formulates treatment plans
  • Completes provider-specific clinical reminders
  • Reviews test and procedure results
  • Completes patient referrals in CPRS
  • Manages patient's medication (including medicine reconciliation)
  • Gives medical and lifestyle advice and counseling

Performs the following direct patient care responsibilities when patient is not present:
  • Completes view alerts
  • Follows-up on patient-related information (test and procedure results, consults and medications)
  • Calls patients and family on the telephone
  • Sends and receives secure messages from patients
  • Discusses cases with consultants and with PACT team
  • Reviews and acts on non-VA medical records
  • Completes forms/paperwork
  • The provider participates in all PACT team meetings and other team activities
  • Collaborates with NP and PA providers and directs care for the panel.

May also perform the following as directed by Service Chief:
  • Supervises and trains medical students, residents and other learners
  • Conducts clinical research studies
  • Involvement in quality management and patient safety involving primary care
  • Data analysis related to primary care clinical operations

Attends additional meetings and educational opportunities with Service Chief approval
Supervisory Controls related to the position, including clinical and administrative aspects

This employee reports to the Primary Care Section Chief for the CBOCs and the ACOS for Primary Care at the CMCVAMC. The employee is responsible for evaluating findings and making technical recommendations fairly independently and is considered an expert in the field. However, if needed, a higher level medical officer is available to provide consultation, guidance, and direction. Generally, case findings and recommendations are not discussed with the supervisor and notes for clinical conferences are not cleared in advance with the supervisor.

Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.

Age, Development, and Cultural Needs of Veterans Requirement

Provides patient care/support, appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, and chronological maturation needs of young adult (18-44 years old); middle adult (45-64 years old), and older adult (65-older) patients. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care/support appropriate to the age of patients served in assigned service areas.

Computer Security Requirement

Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA policy. Follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc., as set out in the computer access agreement that the employee signs.


Work Schedule: Typical tour of duty is Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm, weekends and nightshifts may be required per Veteran needs.
