As a Director of Disability Benefits, you will:
- Exercise managerial authority and leadership and be responsible for planning, directing, organizing, controlling and coordinating the various activities and phases of the development, implementation, and conduct of the division's program functions and activities related to the administration of particular provisions of the RRA (e.g., adjudication of disability benefits and the coordination of decisions and procedures with the Social Security Administration (SSA)).
- Be responsible for planning, developing, and installing medical, legal, and administrative controls to assure correct and uniform decisions during all stages of claims adjudication and for use as a deterrent against misrepresentation and fraud.
- Serve as the chairman of the agency's committee on disability standards.
- Be responsible for the coordination of national disability projects of agency concern.
- Be responsible for the disability freeze programs and decisions which the agency is authorized to make for career railroad employees under provisions of the Railroad Retirement and Social Security Acts and for assuring these decisions are in accordance with Social Security Standards.
- Be responsible for planning, formulating, establishing and administering the plan of operation of the agency's medical consultants in relation to providing medical reviews of evidence to establish disability.
- Maintain a close working relationship with counterparts in Policy and Systems, Field Service and other programs in regard to the impact and implications on division planning and coordination activities resulting from their work efforts in the areas of: program evaluation studies undertaken to analyze current and proposed objectives; studies of effects of proposed legislation; recommendations for improvements in program accuracy and efficient; training budgeting; etc.
- Attend meetings, conferences, seminars and other gatherings of organizations and individuals concerned with the program being conducted within the division to explain or justify policies and requirements, reach agreements, and/or maintain good public relations.
- Review and evaluate reports of operations, discussed critical or significant administrative or technical problems with subordinate supervisors, and make necessary decisions or contacts to effect solutions.
- Manage and direct division activities through subordinate supervisors.
