You will serve as a Supervisory Vessel Traffic Management Specialist and be responsible for coordination of vessel traffic in an assigned geographic area in order to reduce the probability of collisions, Rammings, groundings, and associated environmental damage.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:

  • Supervision and coordination of a group of civilian and/or military Vessel Traffic Management Specialists during a shift.
  • Take initial response actions for incidents, contacts appropriate personnel to respond, issue instructions personally or though subordinates or a representative of higher authority, coordinates efforts, and serves as contact point during incidents
  • Monitors vessel reports, safety information broadcasts, and the transmission of information, advisories, and directions
  • Considers a variety of factors, including but not limited to traffic density, Rules of the Road, regulations, vessel characteristics, traffic patterns, wind, weather, current, visibility, water depth, and their relationship to traffic situations in a rapidly changing environment to identify, anticipate, and resolve problems.
  • Interfaces with co-workers, Coast Guard and other military officials, vessel operators, and maritime industry representatives to exchange information, provide assistance, provide recommendations and directions, facilitate communications between third parties, resolve problems or conflicts, facilitate logistics, and report violations of law or regulations.
