Title: Photography & Digital Asset Intern - Spring 2025

Division: Marketing & Communications

Reports to: Photographer & Digital Asset Specialist

Position Status: Part-time; Non-Exempt

Project Summary

The Virginia Museum of History & Culture is seeking an intern to assist with Marketing and Collections photography and post-production work. With over 9 million artifacts in the collection and a never-ending number of programs and events, the work to digitally document and save Virginia's history is an ongoing priority for the Museum. This internship will provide important help to full time staff in processing photos for use in marketing materials and for educational use.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists VMHC Photographer & Digital Asset Specialist with photo shoots
  • Edits photos including retouching, adjusting colors and lighting, cropping, and removing unwanted objects
  • Works with Marketing team to resize images for social media, email, website and other uses
  • Archives images and organizes files
  • Assists with researching AI tools that will make future work more efficient
  • Selects and organizes photos from prior years into a curated selection for marketing use
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Necessary

  • Experience working in a photography studio with understanding of environment and processes
  • Strong communication skills
  • Maintain high standards for creative output
  • Strong work ethic
  • Basic social media skills including Facebook, Instagram, Snap Chat, Pinterest, and YouTube
  • Ability to size images and color settings for the web and social media

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Knowledge of DSLR (Nikon preferred) and natural lighting, indoor, studio lighting techniques
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (including Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom), Canva, or similar programs
  • Candidate must be a current undergraduate student with a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Interest in history, a plus!

The Ideal Candidate Will

  • The ideal candidate will provide important help to full time staff in processing photos for use in marketing materials and for educational use. The intern will get hands-on experience with photography editing and will possess excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.

Note & Special Requirements

  • Flexible work hours around student's schedule - one semester beginning Spring 2024. 10-12 hours per week on average with the potential for limited weekend and evening events.
