Job Description:

Dabri is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Civil Design Engineer to assist in the planning, design, and review of commercial, industrial, and residential projects for the San Francisco Department of Public Works (SFDPW). The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years of experience in plan review and design, with a strong background in civil engineering, building codes, and construction standards.

As a Civil Design Engineer, you will be responsible for reviewing building plans, conducting site inspections, preparing design documentation, and collaborating with clients and project teams to ensure project quality and adherence to regulations. You will play a key role in supporting the design and delivery of infrastructure projects in San Francisco.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review building plans and provide detailed written comments on design submittals, focusing on structural and/or non-structural disciplines
  • Perform short-term on-site plan review assignments and assist with site inspections
  • Attend project team and client meetings to discuss design and project requirements
  • Provide technical guidance on building codes, standards, and regulations, ensuring compliance with all applicable requirements
  • Assist the quality control team with plan review issues and provide recommendations for improvement
  • Support the document control team in managing project information, status updates, and schedules
  • Perform site inspections and condition assessments for existing water retaining and water conveyance structures
  • Prepare, review, and finalize deliverables for projects, including reports, calculations, drawings, and specifications
  • Assist in quantity and cost estimating for proposed construction projects
  • Develop and monitor project schedules, ensuring tasks are completed on time, within budget, and in accordance with specifications
  • Analyze and interpret engineering reports, professional journals, technical procedures, and code/standards
  • Write or proofread reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, and the general public
  • Inform project and department managers of any scope changes and assist in preparing amendments to contracts
  • Prepare and review proposals for new projects
  • Provide construction site support as needed, either full-time or part-time depending on project requirements
  • Review shop drawings and contractor submittals
  • Participate in mentorship programs as both mentors and mentees to promote professional development
  • Coordinate with external consultants and vendors to ensure smooth project delivery
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients to ensure project success and satisfaction

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Architectural Engineering from an accredited university or college
  • At least five (5) years of experience as a Plan Check Engineer or Plans Examiner working on building structures
  • In-depth knowledge of the California Building Standards Codes and related construction standards is essential
  • Proficiency with office software (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to solve problems effectively
  • Valid Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) issued by the California State Board of Registration (must be kept valid during employment) is preferred
