Who You Are:

The App Association is seeking a state public policy associate who is passionate about technology and policy and is eager to make a meaningful impact on innovation’s future. Curious and proactive, the ideal candidate will thrive in a dynamic workplace with high-speed engagement and excel at tackling challenges. As well as a strong writer and researcher, skilled at managing deadlines and engaging with state government entities, such as legislatures, offices of attorneys general, and commerce departments.

In addition, we’re seeking a candidate with excellent communication skills who enjoys representing the organization in external settings like hearings, roundtables, task forces, and conferences.

What to expect:

The state public policy associate will help to develop and execute the App Association’s advocacy efforts on a variety of issues, such as antitrust, privacy, connected health, telecom, and workforce development. This position reports to the state public policy counsel. Responsibilities will include:

  • Researching and drafting content such as letters, draft legislation, blogs, white papers, and one-pagers for state-level engagements.
  • Participating in state and local hearings on various issues impacting our members.
  • Staying up-to-date on legislative proposals across the country.
  • Lead advocacy on key policy issues like privacy, antitrust, digital health, telecom, and workforce development.
  • Build relationships with policymakers and represent the organization at external events like roundtables, hearings, and conferences.
  • Work with coalitions, member companies, and external partners to advance shared objectives.
  • Monitor state legislative trends to ensure our advocacy is timely and impactful.
  • Demonstrate the ability to navigate complex policy challenges with innovative solutions.
  • Leverage knowledge of the tech sector to guide policy development.
  • Take initiative and manage projects independently while balancing multiple priorities.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional writing skills with the ability to quickly produce clear, well-articulated advocacy that prioritizes factual accuracy.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation abilities.
  • Familiarity with state legislative processes.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and interpersonal.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented.
  • Knowledge of key technology policy issues (e.g., privacy, age verification, competition) is a plus!
  • Self-starter with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Ability to build relationships with stakeholders and public officials.
  • Existing relationships with state officials are a plus.
  • Ability to travel internationally and domestically as needed; approximately 20% of the year (will be less for the first year).

Location:

This position is based in a traditional office setting in Washington, DC, subject to the organization’s telework policy. Currently, the organization is operating in a hybrid environment (3 (three) days in office; 2 (two) days remote).

Compensation:

Competitive salary range based on experience: $70,000-$80,000. The complete benefits package includes medical, dental, vision, 401k, commuter benefits, cell phone, and home internet reimbursement.
