Overview
The Data Analyst II is responsible for the analysis of patient data in accordance with laboratory processes, in a high throughput environment. The Data Analyst II must demonstrate competency, as defined in the department’s training program, prior to performing independent work. This position will work with department management and quality team members to ensure that data analysis activities are defined, documented, and completed to support inspection readiness and that compliance is maintained through procedures, training, documentation, and continuous improvement projects.

Physical Requirements – stationary positioning, moving, operating, ascending/descending, communicating, observing, pushing or pulling, and reaching. Use of equipment and tools necessary to perform essential job functions.

Overview
The Data Analyst II is responsible for the analysis of patient data in accordance with laboratory processes, in a high throughput environment. The Data Analyst II must demonstrate competency, as defined in the department’s training program, prior to performing independent work. This position will work with department management and quality team members to ensure that data analysis activities are defined, documented, and completed to support inspection readiness and that compliance is maintained through procedures, training, documentation, and continuous improvement projects.
Responsibility
- Performs high-complexity analysis and interpretation of patient genetic variants using custom software.
- Uses independent judgement to assess data quality and distinguish noise from real variants.
- Performs supervisor level review of one or more assays.
- Identifies and names variants correctly in each assay with error and requeue rates within departmental standards.
- Updates the departmental work in progress (WIP) with appropriate test status and relevant notes to ensure prompt turnaround time of patient results.
- Complies with the laboratory’s technical, administrative, and safety policies and procedures.
- Participates in the laboratory’s quality assurance plan, adhering to quality control and preventive maintenance policies and appropriately documenting these activities.
- Follows the laboratory’s policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within acceptable limits and documents the problem and any corrective action.
- Troubleshoots and identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance and/or reporting of test results by initiating corrective action and using the defined electronic system to make the required management notification.
- Performs proficiency testing in the same manner as routine samples.
- Actively participates in successful and timely completion of training and competency assessment as outlined in the laboratory and departmental training programs.
- Participates in continuing education according to accepted laboratory standards.
- Participates in department and cross functional teams to resolve problems, identify opportunities for improvement in procedures, and implement projects. Cross functional teams may include the laboratory, Lab Directors, or reporting groups.
- Can serve as a trainer on technical processes within the group.
- Assists in writing or editing SOPs and Work Instructions.
- Participates in feasibility, verification, and validation studies, reviewing data according to appropriate protocols.
- Bachelor’s degree in medical technology or a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 1 year of relevant laboratory experience or training covering the specialties of the laboratory required.
- Prior experience with next-generation sequencing (NGS) methods and data analysis preferred.
- Excellent time management, scheduling, and organizational skills.
- The ability to make sound decisions and implement solutions in a timely manner.
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to analyze and troubleshoot complex technical issues.
- A strong understanding of good laboratory practices and regulatory compliance.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- The ability to adapt and be flexible in a fast-paced and evolving work environment.
