Contracted Educator - Portland Area
Created in 2015, ELSO, Inc. (www.elsoinc.org) provides education and leadership development opportunities that invite youth to Experience Life Science Outdoors. Our mission is to catalyze learning and expand access to positive career outcomes for a more just future for all. ELSO seeks to reduce the achievement gap in STEAMED (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math, Environment, Design) education and professions while creating a sense of belonging for in the natural and built environments, cultivating generations of innovators and problem solvers for local and global impact.
We have an immediate opening for skilled educator open to contract work to support two large initiatives through the remainder of the school year! We are accepting applications until the position is filled, and are encouraging interested applicants to submit materials as soon as possible.
CONTRACT DETAILS
- Budget: $25 to $30 per hour (negotiated based on experience) for approximately 40-100 hours per month. Monthly commitment will vary by expected deliverables and client schedules. See Contract Timeline & Commitments section below for details.
- Commencement & Expiration Date: As early as February 24 - June 30, 2025 with likelihood of extension
CONTRACT OVERVIEW
This is a in-person, student-facing position which will support spring programming related to ELSO’s Consulting Services work as well as our Youth Climate Education Project through collaborative design and delivery of classroom activities and community engagement events at schools and sites across the Portland-Metro region.
ELSO’s Consulting Services Department works with clients across the nation to educate and support organizations in deepening and furthering their investment, partnership, and engagement with people and communities. This position will specifically work on our project with Bird Alliance of Oregon, supporting the Bridge to Outdoor School program which prepares Portland-area students for 6th grade outdoor school through trust and relationship building in 3rd and 4th grade, culminating in an overnight experience focused on affirming a sense of belonging in outdoor spaces and at programs such as Outdoor School. Other client projects may be added as budget and needs emerge.
The Youth Climate Education Project (YCEP) is a 4-year project awarded in fall of 2021 by the Portland Clean Energy Fund to create an outdoor learning environment at Prescott Elementary School in NE Portland, activating community resilience and climate education through community engagement and infrastructure development. As we progress into year 3 of the project, this position will support community engagement and outreach in partnership with the design firm El Dorado. Specific deliverables include classroom visits, teacher workshops, and community events designed to gather feedback and pilot lessons and resources in support of the project.
