
System manager (Part-time, on call requirement)
Location: 3771 Eastwood Dr, Jackson, MS (Remote; occasional travel up to 3 times during contract)
Position Description:
The Mississippi Department of Public Safety is seeking a Systems Manager to upgrade, support, and maintain their mission-critical Mississippi Criminal History System (MCHS). This system is built on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, PostgreSQL, and custom-developed applications using C, C++, and Java. The successful candidate will work on enhancing system applications, updating interfaces (aligned with FBI EBTS specifications), and ensuring smooth system operations and data integrity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Enhance and maintain MCHS, including system upgrades, application enhancements, and interface updates.
- Monitor system logs and transaction errors, conducting research to identify and implement corrective actions.
- Perform data migration and integration tasks across system components.
- Coordinate with third-party vendors supporting interfacing systems.
- Oversee hardware and software product refresh cycles.
- Implement new projects to add system capabilities, including planning, development, and training.
- Maintain comprehensive system and user documentation.
- Support livescan and cardscan certification testing and operations.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Extensive experience with UNIX/Linux environments (7+ years) and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (5+ years).
- Proficiency in RDBMS, specifically PostgreSQL (3+ years), and strong skills in XML, HTML, and Java (7+ years) with JDBC (3+ years).
- Experience with application servers (Tomcat 6 or higher) and web technologies (JSPs/Servlets/JavaScript 5+ years).
- Expertise in scripting languages (e.g., TCL) and in programming with C/C++ with embedded SQL (7+ years).
- Familiarity with software version control systems (e.g., Apache Subversion).
- Knowledge of fingerprint data formats (ANSI/NIST-CSL 1-1993 or later) and FBI transmission specifications (EFTS/EBTS).
- Experience with real-time network-based interfaces (e.g., Nlets, FBI III, AFIS systems).
- Strong problem-solving, project planning, and communication skills.
This role requires a proactive, detail-oriented individual who can work independently and as part of a team to ensure the continuous, secure operation of the criminal history system
