Position Overview
The Overlake School seeks a 7th-grade math teacher for the Middle School division. The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic educator who fosters a love for mathematics, supports students in their academic and personal growth, and contributes to a collaborative and dynamic learning environment. Course assignments for this position will likely be Algebra I.
We are looking for a teacher who is highly skilled at differentiating instruction to support students with a wide range of mathematical abilities, learning styles, and backgrounds. The ideal candidate will be able to create engaging, student-centered lessons that challenge advanced learners while providing scaffolding and support for those who need it. A commitment to flexible teaching strategies, ongoing assessment, and a growth mindset is essential. Classes are student centered and focus is on the ‘why’ of math rather than the ‘how.’ Students understanding what they are doing is more important than speed and following math rules. Primary Responsibilities
- Teach four sections of 7th-grade math
- Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of middle school learners
- Serve as an advisor (homeroom leader) for a small group of students
- Sponsor a Middle School club each quarter
- Lead students in a one-week Project Week experience in the spring
- Participate in department, division, and all-school faculty meetings
- Take part in community responsibilities, such as chaperoning events, serving on committees, and participating in Admissions activities. Some responsibilities may include occasional evening, weekend, or overnight commitments.
- Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, Math Education, Education, or a related field
- Demonstrated expertise in differentiating instruction for students with varied learning needs
- Ability to design engaging, student-centered lessons that promote conceptual understanding
- Strong formative and summative assessment practices to track student growth and adjust instruction accordingly
- Technological proficiency and a willingness to incorporate technology into the classroom
- Commitment to equity and inclusion, with experience working in diverse learning environments
- Strong communication skills with students, parents, and colleagues
- Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively within a department and grade-level team
- Experience working with middle grades students (5th-8th)
- Familiarity with inquiry-based, student-centered learning approaches
- Background in curriculum design and assessment development
- Experience with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Understanding by Design (UbD) frameworks
- Experience teaching IB MYP Math or an Integrated Math program
- Strong classroom management skills
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
