This posting is for a Transportation Worker III position for the Camden County Maintenance Unit. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices involved in road maintenance and construction activities, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, repairing pavements, assisting with pipe installation and other drainage tasks, inventorying materials, other assigned tasks, and the operation of heavy equipment. Applicants must have the ability to operate a small tandem dump truck. Â Duties of this position include, but are not limited to shoveling, raking, asphalt, flagging traffic, ditching and shrubbing. Â The position may be subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or extreme circumstances.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Steel toe safety shoes will be needed. Employee will be expected to work in emergency situations and inclement weather. Â

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 Either possession of a current Commercial Driver s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.

- Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices
- Experience in one of the following: Â shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations; as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew
- Experience in snow and ice removal operations
- Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: Â backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper
