General Summary

The Chief Medical Academic Officer (CAO) provides leadership, academic strategic direction, and overall management of education of Graduate Medical Education for the Central Florida Division; and in coordination with the West Florida and East Florida Divisions. The CAO works with the DIO (Designated Institutional Official) and hospital CMOs to develop strategic academic plans, policies/procedures, regulatory oversight and address operational issues around teaching to build effective relationships between the hospital and its medical staff. The CAO also ensures excellence in clinical outcomes, high reliability and safety among the residents and fellowships. As the ACGME Single Sponsor physician leader, the CAO works very closely with the CMOs and CCOs across Florida on system-wide standardization, dynamic learning community and accrediting body regulatory compliance. The CAO also works in concert with the CCOs and ACAOs to educate and advise members of hospital medical staff on teaching practices, ACGME regulatory requirements and other compliance issues such as billing. Serves as a community resource and provides counsel to regulatory advocacy leadership, medical school deans and AdventHealth corporate leaders on GME matters. The CAO oversees and guides the Florida Associate Chief Academic Officers (ACAOs) regarding the administration of local GME programs. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. In addition, the CAO provides executive oversight for all relationships with ACGME, AAMC, NRMP and other GME accrediting bodies. The CAO works closely with senior administration for Florida and corporate on accreditation issues, residency/fellowship standards, and quality review of residencies and fellowships. The CAO also works in concert with the CFD CSO (Chief Scientific Officer) to advance academic scholarship and research across the Undergraduate Medical Education (UME), Graduate Medical Education (GME) and Continuing Medical Education (CME).

Principal Duties And Job Responsibilities

  • Works with the DIO to ensure appropriate structure, policies and procedures are operationalized for accreditation and performance excellence. Responsible for all programs to be in good standing with ACGME, LCME and other accrediting bodies.
  • Works closely with the AHMG GME VP to align compensation models, faculty contracts regarding GME needs/requirements, resident/fellow recruitment outcomes and the culture of the GME practices. Responsible for the GME leadership supporting appropriate productivity both clinically and academically.
  • Responsible for the ongoing development and refinement of the GME/UME strategic plan for CFD in concert with the VP GME and VP AHMG/GME. Works directly with the Chief Strategy Officer and the Academic Cabinet.
  • Collaborates with the CCOs, CMOs and medical staff leadership to advance the dynamic learning community among the clinicians.
  • Works closely with the Chief Scientific Officer to build and deploy the annual strategic research plan for CFD. Provides leadership to the program directors, LLU dean and faculty to advance the academic plan within UME and GME.
  • Provides executive oversight of performance/process improvement for all residency and fellowship programs. Monitors the requirements and surveys from ACGME including CLEAR, new program site visits, APE (Annual Program Evaluations) and Annual Institutional Review.
  • Responsible for ensuring the highest standards in treatment and care of patients within the GME programs. Advocates the use of evidence-based medicine.
  • Serves as a member of the Florida GMEC committee and corporate committees on standardization of resident/fellow policies.
  • Consults members of the hospitals’ medical staff on regulatory issues surrounding GME such as billing, resident supervision, duty hours and teaching practices.
  • Actively involved in teaching such as didactics, M&Ms, grand rounds and resident supervision.
  • Participates in the development of annual operating and capital budget process.
  • Provides executive oversight of faculty/resident/fellow engagement strategies including whole person programs, stress reduction training, and promoting programs.
  • Actively engaged in efforts to recruit program directors and other GME leaders who will support the mission, vision, values, and purpose AdventHealth and GME.
  • Oversight of the strategic plans to deploy the quality and safety initiatives of AdventHealth through education, standardization, and implementation of system strategies within GME.
  • Regularly attend all relevant medical staff meetings, GMEC, administrative team meetings, and other meetings where appropriate.
  • Serves as the senior GME physician leader providing counsel to senior management team discussions and action plans related to changes affecting GME, improvements, new programs inclusive of all operational and strategy decisions.
  • Maintains current knowledge of accreditation bodies, State of Florida, AdventHealth, and any other relevant, regulatory, or reporting organizations standards on quality indicators and certification processes. Ensures compliance with all relevant licensing and accrediting bodies.

Knowledge And Skills Required

  • Maintains current knowledge of accrediting bodies, State of Florida, AdventHealth, and any other relevant, regulatory (ACGME) or reporting organizations standards on Graduate Medical Education
  • Working knowledge of teaching principles and evidence-based practices.
  • Planning, goal setting and results measurement, budgeting, negotiation, operations management, and process improvement skills
  • Current and up to date on hospital clinical quality, benchmarking, and best practices
  • Ability to work effectively with hospital administration, staff, clinicians, physicians, and community members across Florida and the corporate
  • Effective communication, organization, leadership, and decision-making skills
  • Proficient in use of office technology such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • 5 years’ experience as a program director, GME leadership such as DIO, CAO or ACAO or equivalent
  • Experience in developing data tools to evaluate clinical outcomes and an understanding of healthcare information technology.
  • If clinical work is part of this role, must be eligible to become a member of the AdventHealth Medical Staff
  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Minimum of ten (10) years professional, post-residency experience in direct patient care
  • Minimum of five (5) years in an executive leadership role within a medium to large integrated health system

Education And Experience Preferred

  • Master’s degree in business administration (MBA), master’s degree in public health (MPH), or master’s degree in healthcare administration (MHA).
  • Ten (10) years in a medical staff leadership role within a medium to large integrated health system
  • Medical staff relations, quality measurement credentialing, and previous medical management experience highly desirable

Licensure, Certification Or Registration Required

  • Current, valid State of Florida license to practice medicine as a physician.

Licensure, Certification Or Registration Preferred

  • State of Florida board certified in an approved clinical specialty highly preferred.
