Key Responsibilities

Medical Coding:

  • Reviewing patient charts and recording medical procedures and diagnoses using appropriate coding systems (ICD-10, CPT).
  • Ensuring accuracy and compliance with national and state coding laws and regulations.

Billing Procedures

  • Preparing and submitting claims to insurance companies and healthcare payers for reimbursement.
  • Resolving billing discrepancies by following up with insurance providers or patients as needed.

Record Keeping

  • Maintaining updated patient billing records and coding information to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Updating administrative documents and patient files to reflect proper billing and coding practices.

Communication

  • Acting as a liaison between healthcare providers, patients, and insurance companies to address billing inquiries.
  • Providing clear explanations of billing procedures and insurance claims to patients.

Compliance Audits

  • Conducting routine audits of medical billing and coding practices to identify discrepancies or areas for improvement.
  • Staying updated on changes in policies and regulations related to medical billing and coding.

Professional Development

  • Participating in ongoing training and education to maintain coding certification and enhance skills.
  • Networking with other billing and coding professionals to share best practices and resources.

Experience/Qualifications

Education:

  • GED or equivalent education is required.
  • Additional certifications in medical billing and coding (e.g., AAPC, AHIMA) are preferred.

Experience

  • Previous experience in medical billing and coding or a similar healthcare role
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and medical coding software is preferred.
