Education Forest Supervisor

Description Of Work

The North Carolina Forest Service is a team of professionals who provide forest protection, emergency response, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs. The NC Forest Service provides services to the 100 counties in North Carolina.

Educational State Forest Supervisor Duties Include

• Supervising education ranger.
• Develop and present forestry and environmental education programs for school groups, civic groups, the general public, teachers, and environmental education workshops.
• Coordinate a volunteer program involving local individuals, non-profit organizations, and civic groups.
• Design and coordinate construction and maintenance of forest trails, parking lots, picnic areas, buildings, and exhibits.
• Develop and administer service contracts.
• Enforce forest administrative rules and coordinate with NCFS and local law enforcement officers.
• Assist in wildfire suppression efforts and serve on an all-risk Incident Management Team.
• Work with Bladen Lakes State Forest (BLSF) Supervisor, Ass. BLSF Forest Supervisor and BLSF Management Forester to develop and implement the forest management plan, including but not limited to prescribed burning, timber harvesting, site preparation, reforestation, timber stand improvement, BMP implementation, and wildlife habitat and forest health improvements.
  
  

Staff schedules can rotate to provide coverage all days the forest is open. From March to November work hours are typically Tuesday – Friday 9 am-5 pm, Saturday – Sunday 11 am – 6 pm. The remaining month’s work hours are typically Monday – Friday 8 am – 5 pm. Some holiday and evening work is required. Overnight travel is sometimes required. Be available for fire assignments 24hrs/day, 7 days/wk. during fire season. Wildfire and disaster response may require working extended hours and/or 7 days/wk.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

• Knowledge of forest management practices.
• Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written format.
• Ability to establish positive working relationships.

Management Preferences

• Completion of the N.C. Forest Service’s Ranger Training Program.
• Certified Environmental Educator.
• Experience with general maintenance of facilities and equipment.
  
  

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.

Associate s degree in forest management or an environmental or natural science curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of related experience in providing forestry services; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver s license required within 90 days of hire.
