Description Of Work
The management forester will implement the land management plan on over 10,000 acres of forestlands managed by NCFS in Western NC. Duties include supervision and quality control of management practices such as; BMPs, developing sound silvicultural recommendations, harvest and timber sale administration, forest health treatments, wildlife habitat improvement, regeneration and tending practices, prescribed burning, pest control treatments, land measurement and mapping, forest inventory, special use permits, demonstrations for public education and research. Additional duties include public information and education, fire suppression, disaster response, contract administration, completing reports and other duties assigned by the Assistant Regional Forester.
This position will require responding to wildland fires and other “all risk” incidents and individual will be required to become a member of a NC Incident Management Team and serve on the Regional Fire Team. Individual may serve as a Regional Operations Officer on an as needed basis that will require occasional night and weekend duty as well as being on-call for emergency response. Occasional heavy lifting required. Environmental exposures are adverse weather, forest pests, hunters, intense heat, dust, smoke, and hazardous logging debris.
Work hours are typically 8-5, Mon-Fri. Some work functions require evening, holiday, and/or weekend work. Wildfire & disaster/emergency response require year-round readiness 24/7. Some overnight travel may be required. **NCFS is an Emergency Response Agency – work schedule may require extended hours and/or possible emergency callback.

You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.
Bachelor s degree in forestry from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited institution and two years of related professional Forestry experience; or Registered by the NC Board of Registration for Foresters and two years of related professional post registration Forestry experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirement: Those not registered at the time of hire must obtain registration as a Forester from the NC Board of Registration for Foresters within two years of employment.

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees' other agencies and the general public.
- Considerable knowledge of and experience working in / with the NCFS Water Quality Program.
- Physical stamina to work outdoors for long periods of time under adverse conditions.
- Wildfire qualifications at the Unit Leader / Division Supervisor level or higher.
- Experience in Land Management, acquisition, and setting up / administering timber sales.
- Experience as lead instructor for various Wildland Fire / Forest Management training courses
- Cadre member for regional / statewide training courses
- Experience with NCFS Ranger Training Program
- Experience in water quality inspections related to forestry operations.
- Experience in reviewing and recommending silvicultural practices.
- Experience in reviewing and applying environmental regulations as they relate to forest management practices.
