Immediate opening for a full-time, two-year fixed term professional role; Reports to the Deputy General Counsel and Managing Attorney and will sit in the University’s primary legal office on campus.

Located in Stanford, CA; hybrid schedule includes minimum of three days per week at the Stanford Office of the General Counsel.

Designed to provide an attorney with the experience required to work towards obtaining a permanent higher education attorney position by helping more senior attorneys in the Stanford University Office of the General Counsel (OGC) deliver legal services.

Core Duties

May include:

  • assisting in-house attorneys in providing legal guidance and representation to clients;
  • collaborating with attorneys and clients in litigation;
  • researching a variety of issues;
  • drafting and reviewing contracts;
  • preparing training materials on a variety of higher education level issues;
  • working to improve the OGC’s systems;
  • other duties as assigned


Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience

  • Law degree from an ABA accredited law school and strong academic credentials
  • Admitted to a Bar within the United States (California State Bar preferred)
  • At least three years of legal experience at a major law firm, in-house legal department and/or government
  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Strong commitment to higher education
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sitting.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, use a telephone, writing by hand.
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, sort/file paperwork or parts.


Working Conditions

Occasional work on evenings and weekends.

The expected pay range for this position is $140,000 to $180,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
