Job Purpose

The Sr. High Voltage Cable Design Engineer will be responsible for designing and analyzing underground high-voltage (HV) and extra-high-voltage (EHV) transmission cable systems. This position focuses on creating comprehensive cable system solutions, including accessories, link boxes, fiber optic components, and grounding systems for voltage classes ranging from 69kV to 500kV. The role involves working closely with various teams to ensure that project requirements are met while improving operational efficiency and enhancing customer satisfaction.

Roles And Responsibilities

  • Design complete cable system solutions, including accessories, fiber optic components, and grounding details for HV/EHV cable systems using advanced computer programs and analytical techniques.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on electro-mechanical behavior of HV/EHV cable systems, providing support for installation and in-field applications.
  • Lead the preparation of technical documents, proposals, and contracts, collaborating with Sales & Marketing and Project Management teams.
  • Assist in the creation of test plans, design handovers, and troubleshoot issues during manufacturing and installation processes.
  • Lead or participate in research and development projects, ensuring proper timeline, budget, and logistics coordination.
  • Provide technical leadership by training and mentoring junior engineers, supporting them with projects and calculations.
  • Represent Southwire in meetings, conferences, and customer seminars, addressing technical issues and offering solutions.
  • Ensure adherence to safety standards on-site and promote a culture of safety across the organization.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with at least 10 years of experience in HV/EHV cable system design.
  • In-depth knowledge of underground power transmission engineering and related disciplines, with the ability to resolve complex technical issues.
  • Proficiency in standards such as ICEA, AEIC, IEC, and IEEE, as well as in conducting thermal, mechanical, and electrical calculations.
  • Strong expertise in software tools like Cymcap, Comsol Multiphysics, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Matlab, PSCAD, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Solid technical writing skills and effective communication abilities, both internally and with customers.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Visual Basic for Excel macros.
  • A strong focus on customer satisfaction, collaboration, and achieving project goals within deadlines and budgets.
  • Must be a US Citizen or Green Card holder (no Visa sponsorship available).
