Education and Experience: High School Diploma, GED or higher and one (1) year of studio art classes or museum studies at an accredited program or one (1) year of progressively responsible experience in art and materials handling, gallery or museum work or two (2) years of experience in a skilled craft such as carpentry, metal fabrication, sculpture, or picture framing.

Licenses and Certificates: Valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent from another state.

General Purpose

Under general supervision, assist in the preparation, security, installation, and de-installation of gallery exhibitions and other museum exhibition components, assist with collection care and building operations.

Typical Duties

Prepare and set up art and museum exhibit installations and de-installations. Involves: packing, crating, transporting, handling, storage and maintenance of exhibitions. Assist in the ongoing monitoring of the condition and appearance of displays and exhibitions, identify problem areas and recommend solutions, execute the necessary repair/maintenance or coordinate work with other departments as required. Install gallery graphics such as signs, labels, text and photo panels. Set up and dismantle audio and lighting systems, in accordance with prescribed security and artistic standards.

Frame and/or ensure proper framing of art. Involves: wall framing, sheathing, painting and familiarity with carpentry tools. Order and maintain inventory of preparation supplies, receive, unpack, inspect and pack works of art and artifacts. Organize and maintain exhibitions and transport furniture, load, unload and store crates. Organize and maintain inventory in storage rooms in a safe manner. Escort artwork in transit to ensure proper handling of shipment. Maintain all work areas in a clean and safe condition. Simultaneously participates in multiple projects.
