The Voelker Orth Museum is seeking a new beekeeper. The Museum maintains two bee colonies for its educational programs and to pollinate the garden. The current bee-keeper will be available to support the transition in the Museum's bee care through part of the 2025 season. This is a freelance position at $23 per hour.

  • Resident bee-keeper: maintain the hive:
    • Monitor the health of the bees;
    • Prepare hive for seasons-cycle: spring prep, winterizing, etc.
    • Maintain bee-keeping supplies;
    • Work with museum staff & volunteers to harvest the honey
    • Be available to respond to any emergencies related to the health or care of the bee-colony.
    • On limited basis, present the hive as an educational site;
    • Inform staff of any required equipment and supplies required for carrying out work as the bee keeper;
    • Keep the Voelker Orth Museum informed of any policies, regulations or alerts related to bee-keeping in NYC;
    • Aid the Museum in providing information for any registrations/filings required by public agencies;
    • Confer with the Museum's gardener about any special plantings or requirements to support the bee-keeping activities of the museum;
    • Shared monitoring of hive in winter months;
Qualifications

  • A minimum of three years of experience working with bees (personal, educational and/or business setting)
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with Museum staff, volunteers, and public.

This is a professional position. Time requirements may vary seasonally. Pay rate: $23.@hr
