Job Summary: Program Director, Democracy Strategy Group

The Democracy Strategy Group (DSG), a project of the Democracy Alliance (DA), has been a key amplification and resourcing space for the pro-democracy field since 2020.

At the DSG, we believe that building a true democracy rests on changing the rules that govern democracy. It is not enough to win elections - in a landscape where right-wing politicians have rigged the rules, particularly against BIPOC, young and working people, we must actively expand and protect the access to vote and make every vote count.

The Program Director is the DA’s lead staff er on setting and meeting ambitious DSG fundraising goals for the year, vetting organizations for funding including ensuring that recommended organizations are impactful and bring a strong racial and gender justice lens to all of their work, and engaging and organizing current DSG members and growing the community of donors funding this critical work.

This is a role for a skilled organizer and fundraiser who is committed to organizing donors in service of protecting the democracy we have and building the just, feminist multiracial democracy we need.

Responsibilities

Build and execute strategies to engage DSG donors, including fundraising for recommended organizations and working with DA’s Partner Services team to recruit DSG members to join the DA

  • Lead on outreach and follow ups to DSG members to raise critical resources for pro-democracy investment recommendations
  • Regular coordination with DSG Co-Chairs and Director of Partner Program and Community Building to maintain depth of knowledge on donor engagement and funding gaps.
  • Review list of DSG members and create process for outreach and tracking of donor engagement
  • Work closely with DA’s membership outreach team to identify prospects for DA recruitment and follow up strategies
  • Identify opportunities to invite new donors to the DSG space

Assess progressive landscape via stakeholders in funder and organizing spaces and provide recommendations for DSG funding

  • Vet organizations for DSG recommendations at upcoming calls with support from Programs Associate
  • Build a system and process for equitable and streamlined vetting of organizations with support from Director of Partner Program and Community Building & Programs Associate
  • Make recommendations for investment to DSG Co-Chairs and Director of Partner Program and Community Building for upcoming calls
  • Work with Co-Chairs and Director of Partner Program and Community Building to identify topics and speakers for DSG calls

Work as part of a team with the Director of Partner Program and Community Building and Programs Associate to enhance DSG membership experience

  • Review and provide feedback on promotional materials and other written materials drafted by the Programs Associate
  • Work with the Programs Associate to update investment recommendations and funding gaps in DSG tracking systems
  • Collaborate with the team to improve DSG membership experience

Qualifications

  • 5+ years’ growing responsibility for raising funds for social justice organizations, from institutional and, especially, individual donors. Political fundraising expertise a plus.
  • A commitment to our values of racial, gender, and economic justice in the United States and within our organization.
  • A sense of urgency about the threats to our democracy and a relentless nature for marshaling resources for its consolidation.
  • A record of success working in campaign coalitions, and the ability to negotiate, build consensus, resolve conflicts, and strategically disagree.
  • Experience working with donors, including preparing reports and presentations.
  • A track record of developing, managing, and mentoring staff , grounded in principles of diversity, equity, and justice; demonstrated history of forging strong and positive relationships with colleagues inside and outside your organization.
