Technical Writer with a Mechanical Engineering Background
- A mechanical engineer who is interested in tech writing, or a seasoned technical writer who has done software documentation, preferably for a complex subject matter.
These things are priorities:
- Mechanical engineering (specifically FEA - Finite Element Analysis) experience/education.
- Experience with writing online help for software (not maintenance manuals, not hardware documentation, and not military spec documentation).
- If they don t have engineering experience, then they should have experience working in some technical subject area (something more hardcore than human resource processes, financial software, etc.).
- Some proven track record of working at one company for more than a year, unless they have just always been a contractor.
- Authoring documentation in an XML editor and knowledge of DITA are plusses, but not critical.
General Summary of the Position:
- Develops technical information products for global end users of our computer-aided engineering (CAE) Solves complex problems related to user assistance, training, and product use. Works with product managers, subject matter experts, software developers, localization experts, customer support, sales support, classroom instructors, and customers for product planning and development.
- Requires minimal direction; drives problems and projects to completion.
Essential Functions:
- Creates user-focused content, primarily online help, but possibly also tutorials, self-paced training courses, instructor-led training materials, workshops, graphics, and videos.
- Learns the software product, conducts research, and gains the knowledge necessary to write instructions for using the product.
- Plans, develops, and maintains new and existing information solutions for end users of CAE software.
- Uses XML content-authoring tools to create end-user technical information products.
- Uses Simcenter 3D software to evaluate, test, and document new features and capabilities.
Skills and Abilities Required:
- Ability to understand technical/engineering concepts and to learn CAE product functionality and applications.
- Demonstrated user-focused technical writing ability.
- Must be able to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently in a dynamic environment.
- Ability to work on multiple complex projects simultaneously.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills. Effectively communicates in one-to-one and group situations.
Education and Experience Requirement:
- Typically requires 5 years of relevant experience and a minimum of a bachelor s degree in technical communication, instructional design, engineering, or a related field.
- Previous experience with CAD or CAE software is desirable.
- Experience with Simcenter 3D, NX, or similar software is a plus.
- Familiarity with finite element software, such as NX Nastran, MSC Nastran, ANSYS, ABAQUS, or Altair Hypermesh would be useful.
