BILINGUAL PREFERRED: SPANISH (Fluent in Oral and Written)
WORK SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday / 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
(may call for some after hours and weekends.)
Summary of Duties: Under general supervision, the Police Community Liaison is responsible for assisting the Plano Police Department by serving as a liaison between the Police Department and the Hispanic community by providing translation services mutually between the English and Spanish language and by assisting with law enforcement related programs, investigations, and community education.
Examples Of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Typical Decisions: The incumbent evaluates translation, and interpretation needs and determines appropriate methods to ensure effective communications. The incumbent determines effective methods to convey information to a variety of audiences.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of: Standard personal computer software including word processing, presentations, publishing, and spreadsheets, Hispanic culture, and both English and the Spanish language.
Skill in: Speaking, reading, and writing both English and Spanish fluently; communicating effectively both verbally and in writing in both languages; preparing and presenting educational materials to individuals and groups.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Political Science, Social Science, Human Relations, or related. Must complete a Basic Crime Prevention School as approved by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) within one year from date of entry into the position.
Experience: Two (2) years of work experience which involved public education, multi-cultural community interaction, or related.
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class C driver's license (must obtain within 30 days of hire per state law).
Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: This is primarily an office classification although traveling to off-site work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees may be required to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

- Provides translation services for materials and media at meetings to explain, interpret, and respond to public questions and concerns regarding Police-related issues of interest to the Spanish-speaking community.
- Communicates with the general public and the Spanish-speaking community by phone, social media and in person to translate, interpret and discuss Police-related issues; respond to questions; coordinates communications among involved parties in Police matters; gives and obtains information regarding Spanish-speaking criminal offenders to assist in investigative activities.
- Translates between English and Spanish and prepares a variety of materials and media including crime prevention documents, educational brochures, training materials, news releases, and articles for the Chinese media, legal documents, crime victim reports, complaints, and other Police-related documents to assist in effective communication between the Police staff and members of the Spanish-speaking community.
- Coordinates as required with other law enforcement agencies to provide and exchange information regarding offenders from the Spanish-speaking community.
- Prepares and provides training to Police staff, volunteers, and others regarding Hispanic culture and other Police-related issues.
- Coordinates communications between Spanish-speaking crime victims and community resource providers to ensure the accessibility of programs. Provides ongoing support to Spanish-speaking crime victims throughout case adjudication and beyond, if needed. Provides and translates information regarding program availability and requirements; prepares reports as required regarding work programs and activities.
- Stays current with events in the Spanish-speaking community and to identify possible criminal enterprises from the postings in the newspapers, websites and social media.
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.
- Will be the designated Unidos program coordinator to include scheduling quarterly meetings, selecting topics and speakers for those meetings, and networking with other Unidos groups.
